At Costco the other day I saw a new (to me) canister vac from Electrolux.

It's the Ergospace Green Model EL4101A. From reading on the internet about it, apparently it's an update to the Ultrasilencer. Since there weren't many reviews yet out on the Ergospace Green, I read those on the Ultrasilencer. It's gotten overall very good reviews on Amazon (4+ out of 5).

The reviews applaud the low noise, the superior suction, the fact that the quality is very good and the wands/attachments don't fall off if you look at them wrong, and the self-contained 34 foot retractable cord (on reel). It's also HEPA filtered.

Basically my home is all hard flooring with a few area rugs. I've been using a Bissell Butler on the hard flooring but it leaves a bit to be desired, mainly in the area of the floor attachment (it tends to push dirt around instead of sucking it up). So I've been looking to supplement it with a higher powered model, and I'm thinking this new Elux might be the answer.

So I thought I'd ask here and see if anyone has tried the new one yet.

What djyall think?

It does look nice. Were you able to get any sound with it?

Interestingly, there's no mention of the Ergospace vac on the Electrolux USA web site, just the Ultrasilencer models. I guess it must be very new?

That 3-in-1 brush/crevice/upholstery tool looks very slick.

How clever.

We have it in Poland too. It's a new version of Ergospace. An old version was fine, but this is better. I love the new Electrolux vacuum - UltraOne.

I must say. That is using computer tech for positive reasons at it's best. Well-done. I'm not gonna buy one, BUT, that presentation could certainly sell one!

Yes, Joe, I saw that second video.

It's from Slovakia, so presumably the language is Slovak. Which sounds a bit similar to Polish to me.

I saw this...

I saw the vacuum in question at Costco, and was very impressed with it. It seems like quite the neat little vacuum.. I wouldn't mind getting one and playing with it. The box said that the cleaner was made from a decent percentage (I forget the percentage) of recycled materials, which I also thought was cool.

It's on the Canadian website - see link below.

It seems to have a nice long hose which I always look for in a canister. Could be 8 feet long. I think the Eureka Mighty Mites also have 8 foot hoses. This is crucial on canisters in helping you clean ceiling air vents and the top of book shelves and curtain rods. Most North American residences have 8 foot high ceilings - it's the magic number in North America.

Just a quick update - I have to leave for night school..

This afternoon I picked up one of the Ergospace vacs at Costco. Just got through unpacking it and trying it out on the flooring (mostly hard, with some low pile carpeting).

Initial impression: very nice! It feels like a quality appliance, the hose is indeed quite long. It has plenty of suction and the hard floor nozzle is very well thought out, as is the 3-in-1 tool, esp the upholstery part (which is the first one I've used that really seems to work well).

More later when I get back from school (engine machining!).

Looks like a very fun machine. Does it have any type of power nozzle?

OK, just got back from class. Not enough time to take photos, but...

Yes, it has a power floor nozzle in addition to the hard floor nozzle. However the power nozzle is a "turbo", which means it runs off the suction. As such things go, however, it's pretty good. It handled the short pile wool carpet in the living room ok (an antique machine made rug) as well as the short looped pile rug in the entryway which is covering up a to-do job (after 10 years still haven't tiled the entry after demolishing the old tile because I didn't like the look of it).

The wand is very nice - stainless steel with a black plastic liner. Heavy and the attachments fit very securely without having to force them. I appreciate this because of my recently injured elbow, which prevents me for being able to put much torque on things that need to be twisted on and off with both hands, which has been a problem with the friction fit tubes on my Eureka upright...

I haven't tried the turbo floor nozzle on rugs with thicker pile yet, but I think it will be ok on the thick but very dense carved Chinese carpet. But that carpet is temporarily rolled up (well, ever since I re-did the bedroom floor in laminate last summer) so not available for vacuum testing. I might have to reinstall it in the master bedroom to find out ;-).

The 3-in-1 tool is very nice, as I mentioned before. It has real hair bristles, not those awful synthetic ones, which I suppose adds to its green credits but also makes it a better performer and gentler on more delicate objects. It's a very clever design and I wonder if anyone else has anything similar.

The Ergospace came with one synthetic "Long Performance" S-bag installed and a spare. These are nice bags, but I did notice a bit of dust that leaked out of the installed bag after doing some vacuuming. It's around where the boss for the front wheel hits the bag. So I'm thinking it's just some sort of weird wear on the bag from packaging/shipping. When I get some extra bags I'll see if others do it as well. But the S-bags are nice, with a little sliding panel that closes off the dusty contents when the bag is ready to be changed.

It's a bit weird that the USA Electrolux site still doesn't show this model, and they also don't offer the synthetic "long performance" S-bag, just the paper version or higher priced anti-allergen versions (with a HEPA filter I don't think an allergen bag is really worth the money). After some Googling though I did find a web site selling the synthetic classic S-bags for only $1 more per five pack than the paper version.

Overall I'd say that the Ergospace vac is a classier, better performing canister vac, similar in size to the Bissell Butler I already have, but with more suction, better tools (esp. the hard floor tool), and overall better quality.

Oh, and it's VERY quiet. Even my cat is impressed with that part.

Pics to follow at some point...

Electrolux Ergospace canister

I have not seen this model but I can sure give the style and features a thumbs up. I love my Electrolux Oxygen 3. It is one of the best canister vacs I have ever owned.
If this vac is like the Oxygen3 it will be very, very quiet and have perfect balance with the big rear wheels. Also the position of the hose attachment really makes using the machine easy. It will turn on a dime and never turn over.
I bought the optional straight suction rug/floor tool which seems to have very good design.
I love the design of the comb dusting/uph/crevice tool.
Also like the bag set up with the bag holder and the flap to close the bag when removed from machine.
I found the hepa S bag to look small but it held a lot of dirt and still held the air flow and suction.
Very clever how the handle doubles to hold the hose too.
I sure want to check this Electrolux out and the price seems about right too.
I find I will always grab my Electrolux Oxygen over my Dyson dc23 because it is so much lighter weight, easier to carry and has a longer cord, hose and of course you don't have to dump the dirt container and have dust everywhere.

Electrolux Ergospace

Interesting to note that my Oxygen3 has what I would call "square round" hose and tool connections. From the picture it looks like yours has the traditional round fittings.
I checked my bag compartment and their is no dirt in the compartemt. Mine has used the "S' Hepa bag. I sure like that wonderful longer hose.
Did the machine come with a straight suction rug and floor tool?
The machine looks like it would be easy to store and carry.
Also like the wand station on the back of the machine.
keep us posted on how you like the machine. It looks like a good value and thank goodness a QUIET machine!

If I'm not mistaken, the Eureka HF-1 Hepa filter will fit this vac, as well. At least it's listed on the same page as the costlier Electrolux versions on vacshack.com

Still haven't found a sure source for the motor filters, which are supposed to be changed every six months.

Yes, Fred, I've seen it online for more, anywhere from $240 to $300.

Post# 108179 , Reply# 37   9/11/2010 at 13:58 (4,976 days old) by sudsmaster ()

Also, the bare floor tool works best on hard flooring with the brushes retracted. The brushes are a bit too grabby to work well on carpeting. The turbo brush floor tool is better for carpeting - the revolving bushes make it easier to sweep the carpet. Also, if one lifts it a little the turbo spins up more and seems to help it "digest" debris like pet hair etc.

It would be nice to have one tool that does both... but that is probably not going to happen any time soon.

I ordered a bunch of synthetic S-bags online. I'm sold on the concept but I hope the other ones don't seep fine dust quite as much as the one that came with the vac. It's not a lot, at least not any more than the Eureka LS Filteraire bag seeps in the commercial upright, but we'll see.

Electrolux Ergospace

Rich,
Sorry for the stupid request about the floor tool. I just didn't let the computer bring the picture up. I really like the machine. First time I have heard about the synthetic bags.
I would have guessed it to cost more money.

Post# 108197 , Reply# 39   9/11/2010 at 22:15 (4,975 days old) by sudsmaster ()

Hey no problem. Nobody's perfect, least of all me.

The synthetic bags are 9.99/5. The paper bags are 8.99/5. I opted for the synthetic. I like the idea of more capacity (ability to conform to the bag compartment shape better) and longer Life (ability to hold more dust before it clogs). Not sure if that means cleaner results, but there is a HEPA filter to handle anything that does leak through.

Looks like a really cool vac.....

eurekaprince's profile picture
I am not keen on the placement of the front wheels on the turbo nozzle, nor on the carpet and floor nozzle. They are too close to the corners where one really needs some suction channels to get at dirt hiding near baseboards and at the edges of furniture legs. Any hairs or dirt being drawn past the wheels in these corners is bound to get stuck in the wheels, eventually preventing them from turning and putting them out of commission.

Where does one store the three-in-one tool? And just for interest sake, how long is that hose? Could you measure it for us at some point when you have time?

Have fun - it looks like a great little toy!

Post# 108201 , Reply# 42   9/11/2010 at 23:31 (4,975 days old) by sudsmaster ()

Well, the turbo floor tool is sort of an unexpected bonus. The vac is really meant to be a hard floor vac primarily. I agree that there is a fair amount of "dead space" on the turbo tool due to the wheels and more importantly the bearings/drive mechanism for the rollers, but I found it still works rather well on the thin nap carpets shown in the photos.

The hard floor tool seems to do pretty well on edges, so I'm not sure if those side wheels are interfering all that much with the pickup. And there are air passages fore and aft of the thin side wheels to aid in edge pickup. It's not a problem.

The 3-in-1 tool stores in a little cubby at the rear of the machine, opposite the cord stowage. It's a very nice arrangement.

The hose, not including the handle, is a good eight feet long. The handle adds a couple of feet. And of course the wand adds another two to four feet.

Update

The replacement synthetic S-Bags ("Long Performance") arrived today from Vac Shack. These appear to be a bit thicker than the ones included with the Ergospace, so I replaced the 1/2 full on on it with a new one. Will see if it seeps dust more or less than the one that came with the vac.

Also, the Eureka HF-1 HEPA filter looks like an exact replacement for the pricier Elux version. (I ordered an HF-1 as well).

Update to the update

Well, I vacuumed out the bedroom today with a new bag and it's not seeping like the one that came with the vac. So that is good.

This is the first vac I've had with a bag indicator that actually seems to work. The one on the Bissell Butler never seems to show any fullness, although I know that little paper bag does get clogged in time. The one on the Ridgid shop vac probably works, but it's such a big canister I don't think I've ever seen it show fullness. Oh, and the Ridgid, which normally is attached to the bead blaster cabinet in the shop, saw double duty last week, vacuuming all the cat hair and leaves out of the enclosed patio. Really did a great job, but I resorted to the Eureka HEPA Commercial vac for a small area rug I put under the weight lifting set I stuck in the patio some years back. Nothing like rotating brushes to get a carpet clean.

Next up is to vac the living room whether it needs it or not, and then the second bedroom, which is mostly storage now but has an area rug as well. All will be with the Ergospace.
