Hi all,
I've read several threads on central vacs over various forums. I was wondering if anyone has gone with the Nutone VX475? I live in a townhouse and grew up with my parents' MD Silentmaster central vac and didn't realize how much I enjoyed using a central machine until I bought my first house and had to manuever a Dyson around. The only local installer is leaning towards the Nutone VX475. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated before I spend the money on a retrofit. I will have a mix of wood floors, wool rugs, and wall to wall frieze upstairs.
Thanks!

The Dyson was an EXCELLENT choice in terms of a bagless machine. Bags would have been better, but at least you bought the best. Now in terms of the CV, AVOID Nutone and Beam. Aerus/Electrolux, MD, and Hayden are your best choices.

Personally I wouldn't recommend a Nutone. I like the MD units the most.

Scott! Do not buy that Nutone.!! They are awful. the motor is made in China, the bags are expensive, rip when you try to remove them and don't filter well. Go to Thinkvacuums.com or Central Vacuum Store and follow thier leads. Both sites have vast amounts of info. Greg

YOU HAD A MD?!

I have always had portable vacuums and still do but once I tried a Beam and
I hated it. I've always dreamed of having a Silent Master or an Aqua-Air. Good luck on your search!

Andy Weter...where are you?

Andy would be a helpful source on central vacs if he sees this thread. Airway is back and limited to central vac systems at this point. They've brought back a good and reliable name and have a website Airwayvac.com., might be worth a look. They offer 3 different hose/attachment packages and five central systems. They just starting up again, so they might work with you on pricing too, who knows. You should probably check with your installer and see if he'll work with you if you choose a system that he doesn't sell. Just my two cents worth.

Airway back in business

I cannot believe that I am seeing this, hopefully they will still have the same quality that they had when they closed.

I am a big proponent of central vacs

I have owned a number of them over the years. I prefer a bagged machine over cyclonic. The cyclonic has a tendency to need more maintenance, in my opinion. Nutone tends to be for the building trade - more BOL. If you put one in, get the most powerful unit you can, you won't regret it. I put a smaller Filtex unit in my place in California and was really disappointed. The MD units and particularly the Silentmasters are great units. Their website has the most comprehensive set of information and parts available. My S5 draws 30 amps and has been wonderful.

I actually have that Nutone. I DO NOT like it at all. The bag full lights NEVER work, and when the bag gets the least bit full, the paper rips off the cardboard collar, causing a big mess in the bin. I would definitely not recommend it.

Nutone VX-series

bimmer740's profile picture
I used to work for a small store that sold appliance parts and was a Nutone dealer and an authorized repair center. The VX series was apparently the worst unit they had ever come out with. The techs and the owner never sold them to anyone, they were constantly replacing builder installed units with new ones, and Nutone even stopped producing them for a while so that they could try to correct some of the problems, mainly the motors and computer boards. The shop owner did like the standard Nutone CV series units as they had decent performance and were easily serviced.

I have a Vacuflo 566Q with direct connect inlets in my house and I absolutely love it! I installed it in the house about 4 years ago and I have never had a problem with it. Its a true cyclonic bagless unit, and other than emptying the dust bin, you have to vacuum or brush out a small metal screen inside the unit every 3 or 4 months. I usually vacuum the screen with a canister vacuum and it takes literaly all of 2 minutes to do this. I did research several other manufacturers, and the only other one that was a contender was the SilentMaster. I chose the VacuFlo because its bagless and there is no cloth or foam filter to clog, so it never looses suction, any dirt that isnt deposited in the canister is exhausted outside the house.

Remember that whatever unit you choose, along with proper installation, choosing the right hose, power nozzle, and accessories makes a huge difference!

One last thing I forgot to mention, do exactly as Fred said above, buy the most powerful model they make or you can afford. I believe my unit is rated for 7000sq feet, which is about double the size of my house. The difference in price for this unit was only about 100 or 150 dollars more than the 466Q and it was worth every penny! Trust me, you wont ever regret it!

Good Luck!

Bagged Vs Cyclonic

I think it is a matter of preference. Each one has its advantages and disadvantages. Just get the most powerful unit the manufacturer sells!

Nutone

Thanks everyone. My parents love their Silentmaster but my dad tends to use their Dyson DC17 a little more often because he finds the hose a bit too cumbersome. I never had a problem with it when I was still living at home. I tried using their Dyson at my new house but as I said, found it akward to manuever around my furniture so I gave it back to them. I then bought a Dyson Motorhead DC23 and it broke after a few months. Needless to say, I'm a little over Dyson. I've been using Hoover's Platinum lightweight bagged upright and while it does a great job, there's nothing like the quiet convenience of a built in. I had been leaning towards the nutone because of it's price and realize I'll only be in this house a few years. Thanks for the insight!

Go with a SilentMaster

The classic models out for the past twenty years or so are the S2 (84" waterlift, 185 CFM) and S5 (139" waterlift, 191 CFM), both dual motor units. Usually the S2 was recommended for homes up to 5,000 square feet, and the S5 for anything above that.

Within the last couple of years, MD has brought out a new single-motor SilentMaster, the S44. 148" waterlift and 130 CFM. At the end of the hose, the suction feels like that of an S5 in all but the largest homes, and you can plug this unit into a standard electrical outlet. I have installed dozens of S44s, in homes anywhere from under 3,000 to over 7,000 square feet (including one system with multiple 50 foot Hide-A-Hoses), and have never thought it was undersized. Cost is less than an S2, since it's only a single motor.

My only concern with the S44 was motor life, since the motor does spin faster and run hotter. MD says they have had no issues yet (which, they being the manufacturers, I take with a grain of salt), but I personally haven't had any either. The 6 year warranty does include wear and tear, so even if you manage to wear the motor out in 6 years (unlikely), you're covered.

SilentMaster would be my pick, for sure. And the Stealth kit is phenomenal -- but part of the joy of a central vacuum is that you can use any tool set you want.
