Checkrate/Likes I've been lamenting the fact that I never find a vacuum worth purchasing from the few local thrift shops for quite some time, but this evening, I had some luck. At a Goodwill store in a neighboring town, I found an Electrolux Super J, sans tools and wands, but with hose and a few genuine bags...all for $7.99. With the store-wide 50% off sale, I snagged the machine for $4.00. The machine was dirty, but not filthy-dirty (most cheap plastic junky vacs that I run across around here look as if they have been used in a barn), and has its share of dings and scratches. Still, it runs like a top (the motor sounds great), and the fact that the previous owner made the effort to use genuine Electrolux bags shows that it had some sort of care before being sent to the Goodwill. I gave the machine a quick initial clean-up, and used it a bit with tools from my model E. Suction is fantastic. My question is about the thumb wheel "dirt" control on the bag door. What is its use? What is the difference between the "coarse dirt" and the "fine dirt" settings? Thanks for your info. Joe

Checkrate/Likes *Wow! What a deal !!* JOE What a great find. Sure does make up for what you have not been able to find in the past. The Thumb wheel for dirt control, is about air flow ! It you were to pick up flour, baby powder, talcom powder, ashes from in or around a wood burning fireplace or stove. that would be considered FINE dust. So if fine dust has been picked up, and you want to continue using the same dust bag, with out changing. The machine needs to be on the FINE setting. Other wise if you were living on a sandy beach island, then you would want to turn more toward the course setting. I have always keep the setting on any lux that I use on reg. basis or if I have repaired it. I always ck to see if it is a little more then half way toward the course setting. Enjoy, my be someone out there in vacuumland will have some attachments you need. I have heard in the past(back in the 60's,70's and 80's) that your area of Pa. was good Electrolux territory for salesmen !! Enjoy Norm

Checkrate/Likes Joe, The thumb wheel dirt control on the bag door as you call it, is used to set how much airflow decrease do you want before the machines shuts off indicating the bag needs to be changed. For argument sake, say with a new bag the vac produces 100 cubic feet per minute of airflow, set the dial at course dirt, the vac will shut off at 75 cubic feet, set the dial to fine dirt, the unit will shut off at 50 cubic feet. Checkrate/Likes Just to add a bit more information - The way the automatic cut off works on an Electrolux is it measures the difference in scuction between the motor and the hose inlet. When it rises to a certain difference a valve is activated that turns the machine off. The controll dial sets what that difference will be. If you are vacuuming very loose things like shavings you want it to be a small difference as they will fill the bag before much difference in suction is seen. Conversely when you pick up fine dust it coates the inside of the bag plugging the pours that the air goes through so you would want a high difference or you would pick up very little. This is why a bag can seem nearly empty yet the machine has next to no suction. The dial adjusts for different cleaning needs. Doug

Checkrate/Likes *Thanks for the help...* The dirt control wheel makes perfect sense now. I should have done my homework, however, as I discovered a copy of the Super J owner's manual in the Vacuumland owner's manual archives. The machine has been place in rotation with my other vacs for every other day vacuuming, and is working like a champ. I'm really glad that I stumbled upon it while out last weekend. Joe
