Hey everyone. I was just wondering what your favorite bare floor tool was. Of the ones I have (classic Elux flip tool, Hoover Celebrity tool (not bad), Kenmore Iridium tool, Tristar tool (though not a machine to go with it), Kirby G5 tool, Kirby Heritage 2 tool, and Dyson Low Reach tool, Filter Queen tool, Rainbow SE tool, Hoover Constellation tool), the Dyson is my favorite.

Last night around 4 AM, I stumbled groggily out to the kitchen in the dark to fumble for a glass of water. I accidentally knocked a glass over. Knowing I was too tired to clean it up then, I decided to clean it up after I woke properly. I closed the cat up in the bedroom with me so he didn't accidentally walk on broken glass (great song BTW lol).

Of course I swept up the big chunks. Then I decided to use a bagless vacuum so that I could get rid of the glass immediately. I didn't want to risk abrading the fan of nice vacuum (Kirby), or the hose of an vintage machine. I had two to chose from... Dyson DC14 or Kenmore Iridium. Not wanting to risk the glass scratching the Dyson dirt bin (just detailed and waxed it yesterday!), I opted for the LG made Kenmore. The dirt doesn't seem to swirl around like it would in a bagless upright with a round canister so there was less risk of scratching the bin. Plus, the dirt bin isn't really visible so you can't see the junk anyway so if it got scratched no big deal. I don't love the Iridium (got it from my ex, strike 1, the handle detent is very weak so when connected to the power nozzle, the hose readily submits to gravity, strike 2, the tools are awful, strike 3, the switch is in a place where it is accidentally activated, strike 4, and the whole thing is cumbersome and awkward, strike 5. Not to mention the dirt bin is a disaster to empty). It does have some redeeming qualities like quick release power nozzle, telescopic handle, and very powerful.

So, I had to use my favorite bare floor tool, the Dyson one. I think it's the best bare floor tool ever invented. It hugs the floor so it doesn't tip to one side or the other. It doesn't push the dirt out of the way before it gets to it. It just glides across the floor. And, switching from bristles extended to bristles retracted is a snap. The only possible bad thing is that the bristles are pretty firm so they may scratch a delicate floor. I NEVER use the tool with the Dyson, because I'm tall and I almost have to bend over to do that... the wand on the Dyson is WAY too short which sucks. They should make an extension pipe just for the bare floor tool and tall people! But, that tool combined with the long handle of the Kenmore was a dream to use. I could have vacuumed acres of floor very pleasantly with that combo! Of course I finished by washing the floor with the Hoover Steam Vac just to be sure EVERYTHING was picked up.

So, whats your favorite bare floor tool and why. Are you a boars hair or horse hair only purist? Do you like to mix and match the attachments, or do yo only use them on the machine they came with?

:o)

i do like the lux flip tool a lot with the cut outs on the front row of the brush side, but the miele twister is at the top of the list.

i hate thoes cheap plastic tools with the pedal to change from rug to floor, the stiff plastic brush strips are crap

The Hoover Futura/Powermax floor brush....

eurekaprince's profile picture
along with the older pre-1980 Sears Kenmore floor tool. Both of these brushes have very few strips of perimeter bristles, allowing for cleaning on both the back stroke and the forth stroke. On both, the primary strip of bristles is located in the middle of the brush, not around the perimeter.

I really like the Hoover - it was small enough to store on board the Futura's, and the neck allowed you to angle the wand just enough to keep the brush flat on the floor even when diving under beds. The new Kenmore brushes have a neck that is not angled enough, forcing the brush to lose contact with the floor when you move the wand to a higher angle from the floor - like you often need to do in small bathrooms or walk-in closets.

I don't like using larger convertible carpet/floor nozzles with wheels on floors. They are too big and bulky, and can't be moved sideways with ease and without causing the wheels to scratch the floors - the wheels are not designed for sideways movement. They are also too big to get behind toilets and other small nooks and crannies.

Would love to own a new kewl Miele Parquet Brush!

Would be great to start some other threads in the same vein: favourite upholstery nozzle, dusting brush, crevice tool, etc. We could call these threads "Tool Talk!"

Tool talk (didn't they have that on Home Improvement)

Good idea, Eurekaprince.

That Miele bare floor tool is more expensive than many straight suction canisters! It better be good! Looks nice.

Morgan, I've never seen an Air Way bare floor tool, and Google didn't produce any results. What does it look like?

Jack, thanks for posting those pics. It shows all the reasons I so love the Dyson tool!

I prefer to use the electrolux flip-over tool.
I also like the Eureka made floor tool that came with my Singer C 3

Another great floor tool....

eurekaprince's profile picture
...is the Filter Queen "Swift-Mate"!!!

Never used one, but the concept is fantastic. The tool has no bristles at all - just a pad that holds a Swiffer Cloth. There are suction channels at the front and back edges of the attachment.

I think this concept is ideal - regular floor brushes do not remove fine dust that is clinging to a bare floor due to static electricity. No amount of suction will ever disconnect this fine dust from a bare floor. But a Swiffer Cloth will - and combined with the suction of a vac, the entire spectrum of dirt (big and small) on a floor is removed.

So I change my vote! One vote from me for the Filter Queen Swift-Mate - see link below...

My most favorite bare floor tool is the Miele Parquet Twister! It does a great job on my aunts laminate floors. Second would be the older Compact and Tristar bare floor tools. I also like the Kirby G series floor tool.

The link below should take you to the Air Tec vacuum page. These are the very same tools that Air-Way used for many years. The best tools ever! (well other than Eureka Deluxe)

Vinvac I would agree 1/2 on the Air Way tools

Remembering that I grew up with and Air Way 66. Then a couple of years later my aunt bought a 77.
Now for vacuum carpet I will agree with the carpet tool.
Then for bare floor brushes on the 66 were bad ! Because
the had short little strips of brushes up and down the tool
and then short rubber holes in between the brushes to suck
up the air. I have used that brush on some dusty floors and
they would leave clean marks where the brushes were and then
dust where the suction was ! Hence any 66 or 55 for that matter, I always saw the felt pad on the attachment. So it would pick up the dust !
Now the 77 is a whole and complete other story. The floor brush on that machine was wonderful. Brush from one end to
the other, front and back. Then open end where the air way
suction would pull dust in from the sides. The also wised up
and made the floor polishing pad (felt) to snap into and out of the carpet tool for use. Plus at that point they came out
with a brush on the carpet tool, rather then the combs on the
66 & 55 machine. Those combs would catch in the newer Nylon
carpeting that was popular in our area in the early 60's. It
would actually fuzz and pull strangs of Nylon out of the new carpets. So a lot of rebuilt Hoover (28's) were bought as second vacuums for installed Nylon carpet!
Just my experience.
I love Air way but wondered why they did NOT make a floor brush like on the lux 30's. Until the model 77 !

I must say that My Miele Parquet twister floor brush is probably the easiest to clean. I have for dogs, and most floor brushes get tangled with hair. Everything just pulls right off the Miele brush.

I will also vote for the Meile Twister bare floor tool. Now Riccar has a similar bare floor brush. Both do well.I also HATE those "combo" bare floor tools-hateful things-I have one that when you put it on bare floor setting the brush pops back to carpet setting.I don't like the Kirby "combo" tool either.Love how the video and other literature with the Kirby states-"Your floor tool glides silently on wheels"I find any of the ones I have G series are noisey and awkward to use.I find a generic horse or pigs hair floor tool from a vacuum store to be MUCH better-Kirby should relegate the floor tool provided as a CARPET surface tool-to be used where the upright won't fit. Then provide a proper SEPARATE hard floor tool.A design similar to the Meile ,Riccar would be nice touch.I would think a "twister" style floor bush would be ideal for backpack vacuum users. And oh yes-HATE the artifical fibers used in many floor and duster tools-they can scratch surfaces-and they wear out more quickly than natural hair brushes.

FQ has a felt pad that snaps onto the standard floor nozzle. It works very to pick up all dust, hairs, etc. on any type of floor. I believe that it is now an option with FQ whereas 40 years ago it was standard and the power nozzle was optional.

Norm,

You are 100% correct, the early models, the bare floor tool was cumbersome at best. Some of them even had interchanging heads for the floor tool, polisher...I think I have a couple of those downstairs.

But the last design was great.

My all time favorite is the older Compact floor tools. That seems to be the one that I reach for most often. Have to agree too with Morgan about the AirTec tools. I got a set of them about 3 years ago and love them. When you use the felt pad on the rug tool it does a fantastic job.

Since my collection totally consists of Electrolux, I can't speak about other brands of floor tool, but I find that the Lux floor tools (either the American combo tool or the older Canadian tool) do a decent job. I recently performed a "brush-ectomy" on one of my older extra floor tools by cutting air channels in the bristles, and like the results (i.e. a cleaner floor).

Bare floor tools

I like the Lux combo tool for ceramic tile, vinyl tile, and sheet vinyl/linoleum. For wood plank, parquet, and laminate I have an old Filtex rug tool with the felt pad. Used on high suction canister it actually will polish somewhat as it removes the dust.

Favorite Floor tools

My favorite one is the Parquet bare floor tool for my Kirby. But It is the same design as the bare floor tool on my new Hoover constellation, but a little different then the one on my Miele Red star... But they do work quite well! Dan

combo

Is there a good all purpose tool out there that will go from carpets to bare floors without changing anything? Seems that I remember the GE tool would do that.

I also really like the Lux flip over tool, but mine has lots of "drag" on area rugs. Anyone else had this problem?

Tim
