I remember using that one, a friends mother had it.
Anybody have an idea of what year that was, my guess is late 50's. The one I remember was hunter green. It's on my wish list!!

Nope, never seen one other than this advertisement. It is a Holy Grail vacuum but at least you've confirmed that it did actually exist, Alex, so I can keep looking. :-)

If anyone has one in their collection it would be horribly sweet torture nice if you could post some pictures for us. :-)

Just guessing here but might it have been General Electric's belated response to Singer's S1/2/3 upright? They are so similar in intent and design...besting the S1's 5" flat height by 1/2", certainly enough for bragging rights.

We know that the S1 was a 1949 machine; this GE looks 1960-64 to me.

Judging from the model's hairstyle and the general look of the whole ad, I'd say late '50s. The vacuum may have been offered for a few years before retirement. I love the Singer upright, haven't seen one in my thrift travels, or the GE either. I would definitely remember them. I would definitely love that GE, being that brand collector.

Nice Singer machine

caligula's profile picture
That General Electric upright was a nice machine. My friends mom let me use it. As I recall it was a quiet machine, had attachments but I can't recall how they went on. I loved the idea of the pouch to hold the cord. Only used it that one time, but it's part of my wish list.

Dave, that's a great Singer, I have one and I love it.

I'm a little confused about the "dating" of this machine myself. The model is wearing Capri pants (I guess). Didn't Laura Petrie start that whole thing off? That would put us at 1965. But then, the address on the ad says: Bridgeport 2 Conn. I'm pretty sure we had zip codes by 1965.

Just my four cents for a stamped post card,
Rick

Rick,
The model is wearing long slacks, but as for capris, I know people who remember wearing them in the 50's.

Also, you are right about the address, since it has a postal zone it is from pre 1964, zip codes were introduced to replace postal zones in 1964,

Zeroing on the date

caligula's profile picture
That General Electric upright must have been in the late 50's.
The lady who had that machine worked with my mom at Yale Medical school (New Haven, Ct.) So it had to be between 59 and 62, certainly no later. It was featured on the G. E Collage bowl tv program.

General Electric had it's houswares and small appliance division in Bridgeport, Ct.

Boy you guys are making me work!

The comercials for that General Electric vacuum cleaner were shown on the G&E Collage Bowl hosted by Allen Ludden. I just checked his bio and he was with that show from 1959-62, then went on to host Password.

That brings it to the late 50's

Aside from Compact being given away on Queen For A day and the Electrolux 1205 on the Newlywed Game any other game shows feature vacuum cleaners?

I distinctly remember "The Price is Right" giving away a Filter Queen dark brown model, without the PN, once in the late 1970s. I remember the shiny brand new S wands and FQ rug nozzle they had with it.
It was one of the prizes in the big "Showcase Showdown" at the end of the show.
Every once in awhile they have old "Lets Make a Deal" episodes on the Game Show Network,,,awhile back there was an episode from around 1973-74,,one of the prizes was a Hoover Powerdrive DAM cream and toupe color,,,and in another eposide they were giving away a brown Celebrity without the PN. They had the vac standing up, with the hose nailed or held in a circle to the back of the wall of the display.
The early 70s Bissel stick vac/broom vacs were often prizes on that show also,,,and i have seen Singer BOL twin fan Uprights as prizes on LMAD too,,it for less than 50 dollars,,infact i think the manufacturers suggested retail price was 49.95. I know the Bissel stick vacs were less than 40 dollars, i want to say they went for something like 39.95.
There was one episode awhile back from the early to mid 1970s where one of the prizes(behind door number 1, 2, or 3!) was a Black and Decker Central Vacuum. All that was displayed was the unit itself, a short hose, and the wands with a floor brush attached,,i thought that was strange. Evidently whoever put the displays together for that show didnt spend alot of time on that one!

we had one

My grandmother had that GE in the garage when I was young. she bought a hoover convertible around 1969 or so to replace it. In the mid 70's our convertible was on it's last legs and my mom borrowed it from my grandmother. Had pink bags, cord stored in pocket on bag and the handle release was on the handle grip. It did not compare to the convertible for cleaning though. Mom bought a new convertable in 1977 (I kicked and screamed for a dial a matic powerdrive)and the ge went back in grandma's basement. Then the aunt borrowed it and the last time saw it (around 1990 or so) it was trashed with tape all over the handle and I am sure it ended up in the dumps. Grandma past away 3 years ago now and the house is jsut sitting there. cant waint to go through 2 levels of basement - there is sure to be another vac there somewhere. I know there is a pink regina floor polisher in a box.

This GE was a 1959 ad. Lucy often wore Capris in I Love Lucy but Laura Petrie DID popularize them on The Dick Van Dyke Show which ran from 1961-1966.

Isn't amazing how the people in this club always have the answers! I only seem to remember Lucy in just those polka dotted dresses. I also knew that Dick Van Dyke was on around '65 but didn't know it was early as '61. Since Rob always took the train downtown from New Rochelle, there wasn't much need to show an automobile on that show. In fact I can only remember the episode when he wanted that sports car. If there had been more cars, I would have been known more about the years that show was on.

For instance, Petticoat Junction was aired sometime after 1891, as that's the year the Hooterville Cannonball (Rogers Locomotive #3) was built.

So there you have THAT info!

Rick

I remember Lucy wearing pedal pushers, aka capris, most of the times she wore them was when she was shown doing house work of some sort, and I believe some during the episodes when they were in the Conneticut house.

I think you are talking about when Lucy was doing "The Lucy Show", and "Here's Lucy" in the 1960s and early 70s. I distinctly remember her wearing them in those shows,,remember when she worked in the bank for "Mr Mooney"?
I dont remember that she ever wore pedal pushers in the 50s during "I Love Lucy",,but its possible, she may have in the last episodes.

She wore them in quite a few I Love Lucys, one example is "Lucy does the Tango" .
