So I happened to be perusing the "net" and noticed on one of my other forums I'm on concerning automobiles, that they found all these pictures that were originally used, or taken and archived by LIFE magazine.

I decided to do a quite thourough search of the site, and found a quite interesting set of photo's over the redesign of the upright vacuum for the Singer company, by good ol' Raymond Loewy.

So here are a few great flashes from the mind of LIFE, here for us to enjoy....

Chad

The first image here, shows the original model of Singer Upright, that was initially a Sturtevant made model, thru it's own first design, to the new S series by Loewy...

Shot 2

This next image, shows the evolution of the new S Series cleaner, including a few mockups. The pic caption from life states that the gentleman on the right in Raymond. I however do not think so. Ray had a full head of black'ish or Salt and pepper hair....

Any guesses?

The other gentleman was claimed to be a head bigwig, from Singer....

I have a few more that are unrelated...

This one depicts a young aspiring actress using a very new looking Electrolux Model 30 XXX, to clean her New york Apartment.

The actresses name is Jean Kemmerling.... for those who may wish to ask....

And fianlly...

A shot of a woman working on a vacuum cleaner assembly line. I am unable to tell what brand she's working on, but suffice to say I will crack at it and say Premier/G.E.???

Any guesses from out there???

Have fun everyone

Chad - that picture of the Singer prototypes is fascinating! Thanks so much for sharing them!

Could the cleaners in the 7th picture be Hamilton-Beach? Otherwise, I'd agree with Premier/G E.

As a Singer S fanatic I thank you muchly. How great to see what the prototypes evolved in to.
No, I don't think that's Mr Loewy either.

would you share?

Chad,
Would you share the website of the forum on automobiles you mentioned? Sounds interesting.

What great pictures!

And I am 90% sure that the vacuums in the assembly line are Hamilton Beach model 14.

Some replies....

So,

Jack- Hamilton Beach didn't even cross my mind. So yes possibly. I wouldn't be a bit suprised. Yeah I couldn't believe what "was" available to find. These were all images hosted by Google, that were originally taken and used by, or kept by LIFE magazine.

Dave- Aren't these pic's of the new S series Singers just wonderous! Aparantly this new cleaner was really astonishing for the day, that TIME magazine was bothered enough to do some sort of profile on it. I do recall seeing a review done in a 'industrial design" magazine from the period, but little else. Until now... Makes me appreciate my U-59 Golden PowerMaster even more, as it was a later great grandson if you will of the original talked about here!!!

Roger- No not a problem. As I was relaying to Jack Copp, I'm a HUGE 1948 Tucker fan. Have been ever since I saw the movie "Tucker, The Man and His Dream" for the first time in 1988. The site, in which I found the initial link to the LIFE image preservation project, was thru their website www.tuckerclub.org..., of which I am a member. You may find me by looking for westinghouse1963.

John- I'm glad that you know what's on the production line here, because I had no idea from the initial picture, no matter how clear, and precise. I'll vote for your assessment.

FRED- I think making these pic's of the day would be wonderful. I was just bumming around last night, and kinda stumbled onto the place to find them. As I stated I popped over to my Tucker car site, and there was the thread that gave the link to LIFE images! And becasue you and John have concurred, I will vote for the Hamilton Beach factory assembly line in the last picture there.

Terry- Thanks for your kind thoughts, and the POD vote.

As far as I've found, there are no more of these shots at this point. Although they are stating more images are being uploaded, and filed constantly...
