I've been an avid collector of Electrolux machines since the start, my very first was a 1949 model XXX. Didn't ever run quite right, even after servicing the motor the suction left something to be desired. I chalked it up to the motor mounts having gone bad, and the motor was no longer sealing against the bag chamber. Regardless, I enjoyed it thoroughly, and it sparked a love of the brand.

As of right now, I have a 1940 XXX, an LX with a bad attitude and an aggressive cord reel, a lovely Automatic F (featured in the photo), an E, and a Canadian Z88. I've switched them all over to HEPA bags, and they couldn't be happier. Sooner or later I'm going to invest in a Wessel battery powered head, I've been eyeballing a 280. The straight suction rug nozzle works awesome, but they could all benefit from an extra boost.

I've often wondered how they made their machines so quiet, I know that the motors were built exceptionally well back in the day and with a little love they stand the test of time, and then some. I really feel like Electrolux built some of the best vacuums that are still out there 😎

Enjoy!

Great vacuums. That model F is very nice. I have one as well.

Yes, for a canister/tank I usually reach for an Electrolux. I just finished rebuilding a motor in a golden jubilee and 1205 (really both are 1205s) the motor was easily to rebuild, and the quality is there. Nice long heavy duty carbon brushes.

I have quite an affinity for the Electrolux brand as well; however, I don't have anything in my collection as old as yours. For canisters, I have a pair of 1205's, a Super J, Silverado, Diamond J, and a Diplomat LX. Uprights include a Discovery II, Epic 3500SR, and Genesis LXe. Even though I also have a bunch of Kirbys and a few Eureka/Sanitaire machines, Electrolux is almost always my go-to. The Kirbys are great for brute power, and they're fun to work on and polish up, but the Electroluxes offer a refinement and ease of use that's hard to beat. They're just a pleasure to use.

I had a young lady who came and cleaned my kitchen and bathrooms every couple of weeks, and she absolutely fell in love with the Electrolux uprights. She was completely amazed when I told her the Discovery II was more than 30 years old. She thought it looked too modern to be that old, and was one of the best vacuums she'd ever used.

I think if I remember reading what Electrolux collectors have said it's the steel canister and the shape they gave it, plus the metal bag chamber, that helps muffle the motor noise. Also might be the fan too.

Instead of being fitted tight against a rubber seal the motors were suspended on a rubber gasket which dampened the vibration. That, along with balanced fans, good bearings and, in most cases, after filters effectively dampened the motor noise.

I stumbled across

A couple of those stock exhaust filters, and I love them. One is in my E and the other is in the z88. Makes them very quiet and with hepa bags the motor stays cool.
