I've had my Dyson DC17 Absolute Animal for 2 years now, having purchased it off eBay in November 2021. Although there's nothing really wrong with it, there is a major annoyance that I've been meaning to address.

The annoyance in question has to do the brush roll. The original one had worn down bristles and one of the end caps was seized up. I had to replace it with a new, generic one from Parts Warehouse. I went on Amazon and got a new, generic belt for the vacuum as well. When I installed that new brush roll and belt, I noticed that the vacuum was a bit quieter than before. But the new brush roll produced an obnoxious rattling noise, as if it were screaming. It also sounded uneven on low-pile rugs, as if the brush roll was slipping. I thought nothing of it, because of how incredibly aggressive the DC17 brush roll is.

However, more recently, about a month ago, I was vacuuming the rugs downstairs, and my dad asked me why the Dyson was so loud. I told him that it was just a normal by-product of the beefy brush roll. Now that he has noticed this obnoxious rattling, I felt that I had to get to the bottom of this (pun intended) and take care of that issue.

So I removed the soleplate and moved the brush roll aside. It turns out that part of the clear plastic housing was worn down on the side farthest from the belt. When the brush roll was installed, there was some play on that side (I could wiggle it up and down). This resulted in excessive vibration, thereby producing that horrid rattling. The other side (closest to the belt) was fine, however.

After some deep thought, I devised a little hack: put some thin strips of adhesive rubber where the brush roll sits, which would make it sit still and eliminate the rattling once and for all. The other day, I purchased a roll of adhesive neoprene rubber (intended for floor cushioning) on Amazon for $14 and got to work.

I cut out some very thin strips of rubber and placed them on the worn down groove where the brush roll sits. Initially, I tried placing them straight onto the groove, but when I went to replace the brush roll, it scrunched up those strips and ruined them. After some trial and error, I ended up sticking a couple of rubber strips sideways in the housing, right at the points where the brush roll sits. It was a challenge to get the brush roll back in, but I eventually got it. Once it was in, the brush roll was in there rock solid; it wasn't going anywhere.

Now for the magic moment. Today, I went to test out the DC17 with this little hack in place. Sure enough, the vacuum is now a LOT quieter! I ran it for a while, and the rattling is now gone. The brush roll sounds SO much better.

So, in conclusion, if your vacuum's brush roll is vibrating excessively, all it takes is some thin rubber strips to quiet it down and make it sound a lot healthier. Now I'm glad to not have to listen to that annoying rattling noise whenever I'm vacuuming the house. I'll include a link to the rubber I used.
