Hey y'all! Just wanted to share a few of my favorite machines. I love all of the vacuums in my collection but these stand out for whatever reason, and they're fun!

Hand vacuums come in all different styles and variations, and some designs have stood the test of time. First off is a Singer H-12, made right before Ryobi acquired the company from what I can tell. It's marked as 1.9 amps, and was made in Anderson, SC, under the Singer Motor Products name. It took a bit of work to get it running right, but it was worth it. Fortunately the motor was easy to service, and Lucas gun oil is fantastic for lubricating sleeve bearings and bushings. Kind of a sparky armature but it has a lot of power compared to some of the earlier straight suction handhelds.

Second is a gorgeous Panasonic Jet-Flo 1050. I was stunned to find it at the thrift store, and all it needed was a cleaning and a new belt. If any of you find one of these, a Dirt Devil style 2 belt is a direct replacement for the stock belt. The filter is also washable with warm water if there aren't any holes, so it'll run like new with a little maintenance! I was surprised just how quiet it runs, it's arguably the quietest hand vacuum I've ever encountered. The performance is solid too; it tackles pet hair without missing a beat. Worth having in any collection!

Third, and probably my favorite go to upright, the infamous Eureka Excalibur upright. This was the biggest project I've had in a long time, due to thin paper bags the motor was packed full of dust. I ended up taking the main motor out and got creative with a straw cleaning brush to remove all of the impacted dust from the fan blades. Not a tornado siren anymore! I also tore the brush roll motor down to the framework to repack the bearings, so now it runs like new. I always appreciate simple designs and that motor was no exception. After some love and effort, this machine performs almost as good as new! Seems to clean just as well as anything you can buy nowadays 😆

Thank you for

Reading through the novella 🤣 and if you made it this far, I also upgraded the headlights in the Excalibur with some automotive LED bulbs, looks super high tech now 😂
And since HEPA bags were never made for this cleaner, I got creative. I took the cardboard collars off of 2 style U bags, and glued them to some Hoover Y/Z cloth bags. Hopefully I won't ever have to service the motor again, and so far the bag chamber is spotless!

I've seen a few

On eBay with the tools! How the heck is the nozzle supposed to come off? I can see there's a pin on the fan casing but I don't know how to take it off 😂

Always found the Excalibur fascinating, even though it seems to have a reputation for overheating at the pair of power switches. Do you find that the switches get hot during use? Any smoke or sparking at all? Not sure why this problem would have developed considering the long history and experience of the company.

My other question: does the suction pass through the long hose during normal carpet cleaning? or is it diverted to a shortcut path directly to the brush chamber when in carpet cleaning mode?

Eurekaprince, I was fascinated too!

I think the only reason I was so hell bent on finding one was after seeing vintage advertising for the machine. Just the way they described it was enough to sell me on it 😂 imagine my reaction seeing one on Marketplace! Lol
It really does perform well, and this one is a weird in between based on the model number. All of the other ones I've seen (the few that have been on eBay) had a HEPA exhaust filter - this one doesn't. The power switch is also different from the other variants, and I haven't noticed that it gets hot during use. I haven't noticed any sparking in it when I turn it on either.

The hose/floor diverter is absolutely unusual, I will have to make a quick video tomorrow. It's a lot to describe. One quirk I have noticed is that a little bit of the suction leaks around the power switch? I'm curious as to how the internal layout of the handle assembly and bag chamber was designed. There's clearly some crossover happening that's allowing air to move around the switch 😂

"--how to take it off.--"

I think just twist and pull.Think of Filter Queen hose.May be 'stuck' from years of dust, dirt & grit.

Oh I can only imagine

How much junk is built up. I'll give it a twist 😂

For your viewing pleasure, eurekaprince this is for you!

Just made a video kind of explaining how the hose and floor change over works on the Excalibur, I may have misspoke about which way the diverter valve moves. When you pull that hose out I think it may flip over to the right to cover the air path to the floor. At any rate it's on a heavy spring and definitely made of metal, you could see how hard I was struggling to reinsert the hose! Lmao
