I acquired this in trade yesterday, time to get cracking! The motor looks good through the vents and everything except the strain relief and rear oiler cap are intact. Any ideas when this variant came out? The last patent date is 1921. The handle tube is black painted metal also, not wood. Only one cord hook and no spot for a bottom one.

Nice find there, but definitely a diamond in the rough. I have one too, and mine is still a work in progress. Mine was made in April of 1926 and going by the serial number, yours is older as the serial on mine is 483480. If by chance you have to take it apart for motor repair, you will find the month and year it was built stamped on the armature. Here's a couple pics of mine when I first got it. First one is a pic of the whole vac, second is a closeup of the nozzle, fan case, and bag outlet, third is a closeup of the handle showing the unusual push button switch. Hope this helps, and good luck with your restoration.

Looking at the age of the previous wiring and the immaculate condition of the motor internals(I did not clean for the pic!) I think this was restored decades ago and sat in the sun. The bag strap came off the second I turned it on so for a quick fix I put wire thru the bag seam and put a chain/spring on that wire. The front wheels I don't believe are original, but close enough for me. The bushings have been replaced and honestly the front one could probably be replaced again. If only I knew how to do that..
The handle had been sprayed black long ago. I found overspray on the grip and fork. After stripping it away I thought I should base it on Tom Gasko's Royal and did it in silver hammertone(not plated like his) paint. Same goes for the nozzle lock and the back wheel bracket(which had also been sprayed black). I would like to plate them but that seems to be very expensive. Maybe in the future though! Here she is! |
