The Vacuumland membership list has 3951 names on it. However, only a small handful of people post regularly nowadays. I wonder why.

Dedicated forums like this one are dying off. Most of the collectors that used to post here now post in one of the many vacuum related Facebook groups. I mostly post here to add info to the massive archive for future reference.

I've been thinking how quiet it is here lately.
I'm not on any social media, so this is my only resource. I'm thankful for the knowledgeable regulars who have stuck around.
Sometimes it takes a while, but you can still get answers a lot of times.

I check the postings regularly, but it's been a couple months since I've posted anything. And I usually respond when someone else asks a question that I can be helpful with unless it's already been answered.

Hi:
I am only an occasional user, but have always been amazed at the scope of the members knowledge and the resources here. I was wondering why I only received two replies to my offer to give away a set of four re-bristled, unused NORCA roller "agitator" brushes to some collector whom owns a NORCA vacuum cleaner.

I hope this link to my posting will work and someone can help me give the brush set to someone wit a NORCA: www.vacuumland.org/cgi-bi...

Thanks,
Ron Reeland

I don’t really come here anymore because I don’t collect anymore. Once in a while I’ll check to see if there’s something I can offer advice wise, but it’s really become a toxic place. Too many people butt heads over vacuum cleaners, past events, and slander oof don’t get me started. Prior to my life’s change I used to enjoy the forums, I used to enjoy collecting, learning, and offering advice, history etc… believe it or not over the last couple of years I’ve forgotten a lot of what I once knew. I’m glad to see the site is still running and that people do come here but I do agree with some when they say that people have moved to social media platforms. I am no longer part of any of those groups either for a lot of the same reasons here. I do miss the old days of the forums being alive. From the stories, to the “online roleplay”( Helen and ida, glamourene, etc) to the wonderful historical context. This place used to be wonderful!

This is one of my main sources of floor & surface machine info, too (another being Doug Smith's website). I appreciate the wealth of information from contributors and try to add to it when I am able; although I do take breaks from time to time.

Toxic

I would love to hear what some define as "Toxic". If someone here said 2 and 2 is 6 and someone said sorry 2 and 2 is 4 is that being "toxic"? What good is a forum like this if you can't disagree with someone or have a different point of view and be labeled Toxic.

I recently disagreed with someone about what they called a "mint" Kirby bag, and pointed out why I simply disagreed with their analysis, was that being Toxic? Is asking this question to some here being toxic? Just a friendly observation.

Jim

I'm not on Facebook and don't intend to be. That said, I do stick around here, mostly lurking, but occasionally posting when I feel I have something worthwhile to say. I used to share posts about my latest 'vacquisitions', but I've been under a, mostly successful, self-imposed moratorium on purchasing any additional machines, although I did have a 'relapse' last summer, when I bought a mostly nice Kirby G4 and a not-so-nice Gsix that had parts needed (handle back, power cord and headlight bulb) to complete G4, far more cheaply than purchasing the parts a la carte. Thus far, I have resisted any temptation to acquire parts to put the Gsix back together.

Antoine,

I agree with you, but even the words rude and condescending are words that how should I say, deal with someone's feelings. What you may think is rude or condescending may not be rude or condescending to others. It's a real balancing act today.

It's seems we have lost the art of agreeing to disagree. We are also losing the ability to laugh at ourselves. like the old saying, some people "wear their heart or feelings on their sleeve", and as a result get their feelings hurt, again it's truly a balancing act today more than ever before.

Thanks for your response, Antoine.

Jim

Well put, Jim! When I feel like someone's words toward me are hurtful, I remind myself that by feeling hurt, I am giving those words power. It is better to let go of those feelings and thereby deny those words--and the individual who directed them at me--any power they might otherwise have over me.

Think the know the facts about everything because people agree with them. If you disagree your toxic?
It sounds like someone just t wants to hear how great they are and those with different opinions are toxic.
I thought Justin Timberlake after getting cheated on was the only toxic person.

Wow , I didn’t realize my “toxic” comment would garner so much attention.
I agree to disagree is a great way of putting it.
My issue which I believe is felt by many others is that it doesn’t end there but usually is toped with rude comments and verbiage . Just go through some of the threads .
Now that said , I do believe there is a cordial way of making your point . For example Jim disagreed with Liam about the condition of the bag but was very nice about it , he didn’t use any degrading or rude comments .

I think we should all be nicer and mindful of each other.

I will keep on posting here as it’s a great source of information and I would love to share my collection with others :)

I truly appreciate the opportunity,

David

David,

You were not the only one to use the word Toxic in this thread. You were the second to use it here. Thats why I asked the question. Personally, I don't ever remember using the word recently myself, but I have seen it used here in Vacuumland a number of times over the years. I agree with your comments and love your work and website. You are a real asset to this group...thanks.

I visit the forum daily. A lot of valuable information and history and talented people sharing information and repair techniques. I am grateful for those who answer the same old question by new members, and do it with grace, style, and professionalism. Thank you.

I enjoy the FB groups as well. I love to see the photos and commentary by ALL the talented individuals who share their knowledge and time - Kyle K and David O among them. Gary K.

I left FB due to the censorship on the website. When I restored my Kirby 4C I tried to post about it, and I started my post by saying "Ladies and gentlemen. boys and girls introducing my Kirby 4C"

FB would not let me post it using that comment. When I changed it to simply saying "introducing my Kiby 4C" That was OK but using the words ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls was not allowed. I guess it was too inclusive. Thats when I knew it was time to go, and don't get me started on FB fact checkers, what a joke.

Everyone's still here. When this forum started in the mid 2000's I'll bet there was barely 100 people here. Consider nearly 4,000 an achievement! Also those numbers are inflated because it counts registered accounts, no matter who is registering. Most forum websites will have a long list of bot accounts registering and never post. This site also counts deleted/dead accounts as members I believe too. So even if it says over 3.5k members there likely isn't that many in actual human beings.

The more toxic and gatekeeping that social media gets, the more people will flock back to forums. Automotive repair and collector forum websites are still thriving regardless of social media because it's the only place you can get real answers and interactions about topics. Gotta play the long game. People will come back, and active talkative users will increase, just be patient.

I'm here just about every day. I read just about every post. When I post, it's usually to ask questions, or to compliment someone else's awesome vacuums.
I don't have any knowledge to share with others. I'm mostly here to learn, admire, and to enjoy the company of others who share this somewhat strange hobby.
I don't do social media at all. And, I don't have a circle of friends in person to share this with.
So, I really appreciate everyone who has helped me with problems, shared our collections, or just exchanged some pleasantries.

I check in and read the site a few times a month, but only chime in when I know I have something to add to the conversation. I joined the site when I was still a teenager and feel like I kinda grew up with Vacummland. I've moved a few times and have progressively less space to collect, but the interest is still there.

I try to stay off Facebook and Reddit; not sure where else there's collecting communities. I really hope this site never goes dark and would be willing to donate to keep it that way. The archive of knowledge is priceless.

Just returning!

Used to spend hours on the site, but moved to my Facebook group primarily recently. Testing the waters and it's kind of nice being back.

As for "toxic" behavior, I will admit without hesitation that I'm pretty sensitive at times 😂 there have been some fights on here but most of the time they resolve themselves. There's also become a bit of a divide in the community, but I don't know what's caused it. Some people prefer to stick to themselves and their smaller groups and that's fine. At the end of the day we all collect appliances that suck up dirt, so what's to fight about?

Anyway, it does feel pretty okay being back on here after a several years pause. If any of y'all are on Facebook and would like to at least check out my group, it's under the name What's The Dirt? 😎

I do look forward to rejoining the ranks and seeing if this forum picks back up

As with many others, life has simply gotten in the way. I try to check here every week or so, and about the same with the Facebook groups. I have no intentions of getting rid of my current collection, which I still enjoy, and still pick up sweepers every once in a while. I've made great friends through this website and hobby, and a small group of us try to get together for monthly dinner and some holidays.

I don't have the patience to sit at my computer on here, or many other websites anymore. I spend enough time on the computer for my work as it is.

Good to see you!
I thought of you recently, with the thread about old phones. Didn't you have a collection of those as well?
I still have all of mine, though I haven't done anything new with any of them. I did, in a moment of weakness, pick up another Western Electric 500 at a thrift store. It's rare to find one at all, and it's a very original, maybe 1958, with a Bakelite handset.

I'm here and have been checking in every morning to see the Vacuum Of The Day. But as of Wednesday December 13, will be saying goodbye to Arizona and returning to my hometown of Wallingford, Connecticut. I'll soon have all my paperwork and can share the history of Electrolux and Kirby. And yes, a new display of my electric machines. As for the non-electrics, they will be in the living room for all to see.
