I’m no Hoover expert, but I think the wider hood with the wider headlight and flat sides came first and still had the rear slot for the hose like the classic Convertibles. The blue version with the concave sides I thought debuted many years later, and did not have the rear slot for the hose.
I always preferred the first version…thought it had a more sleek “nose” than the later one. |

Thanks, John & Brian. I understand that they are not interchangeable, so maybe the base style or screw holes are also different. |

Picture 1 - "Elite" has the high-performance motor in it. Maybe, the newer design was to coincide with that. I think there were several different designs. I got a plastic base Jc Penney convertible this past weekend and the hood is different than the two posted.
