Does anyone have information on how to get to the auto cord retractor on a Hoover Dimension 1000 model S3281?

I think you will find hidden screws after lifting rear wheel and axles away from body. Use caution with any cordwinder and spring.

The rear wheels hide screws that need to be removed in-order to reach the cord winder.

The rear wheels and axles are one part.
Flip the suction on its back so that the rear wheels are up in the are. You will notice the rectangular shaped clip of the rear wheel attached to the suction unit. With a flat head screwdriver gently pry and lift from the notch, the rectangular plastic of the snap for the wheel into the suction unit. Grasp the wheel with one hand, while gently prying up that connector to then slide rear wheel assembly off of the suction unit.

You will then remove two Phillips screws from each wheel well.

Flip the machine bag over, remove the bag compartment door.
The top back end of machine with power switch and all will then lift off. The rear of the machine will also come off.

Be sure to take photos and make notes as you'll see hoses attached for the full bag sensor.

The cord reel also has a high tension spring attached to the brake arm.

Generally those cord reels go bad over time by snapping the spring just before the rivet connection to the reel itself. Be extremely careful and cautious doing any work in or around that spring!! The cord reel spring is extremely long, sharp and under very high tension. You do not want it coming out of the housing and whipping in the air.
