Good afternoon,

Today, it marked the first time that I have disassembled a Fantom Fury motor. It turns out that the bottom bearing was worn out and I went ahead and replaced the bearing and cleaned the fans. After assembling it, turns out the motor was arcing! Even before I took the motor apart, the motor did get hot and it was arcing before I replaced the bearing and made a whiny noise still. There is no rust in the motor and are there any tips to where I can get replacement brushes? I know there has been a topic on this by Nick Long, but it was resolved with a new motor housing. The motor that it is taken out from is a 2000 Fantom Fury Orange version from Wal-Mart.

Oh, that doesn't look good!

 Arcing from worn brushes is one thing, but arcing all the way around the commutator is never good. To my understanding it means shorted armature windings, which would explain its running hot. If you can, check the motor's current draw. It's probably above normal.

 I just remembered, one of the motor windings got poken off when I replaced the bottom bearing of the commutator when using my bearing puller which could explain why. It is not a good sign as I saw and even after reseating the brushes and commutator, the motor is at a low pitch and not at it's normal pitch like how a 12 Amp Fantom Fury should sound like which the winding was grabbed by accident on the bearing puller as the teeth didn't reach it properly. It was a 3 jaw bearing puller instead of the 2 jaw.

Fans have been cleaned in the motor and I may or may keep this motor in storage until I get the windings repaired as they were never damaged before the disassembly. At least I now know how to take a motor apart.

 I am aware of that NOS Fantom Fury motor. I am going to buy in case to have another reserve and we are going to take it apart again to have both bearings replaced and clean the commutator and reseat the brushes. I may as well replace the brushes if I am not able to get them reseated to stop the sparking. I do have a brush seating stone.

Replaced bearings and reseated commutator and brushes

 I have now replaced both bearings on the motor and reseated the brushes and commutator. After putting the motor back together and installing it on the vacuum. It now sounds low pitch and the bearings started to sound whiny instead of the typical normal pitch the 12 amp Fantom Furies make and it still arcs but not as a much. Any help on getting the pitch back up and maybe the bearings I bought might've been defective?
