I haven't been seeing squat for bagged vacuums at the thrift stores lately.
I saw these two today. Actually, the Dirt Devil has been there for quite some time. I'm thinking it's probably on its way to the dumpster. There wasn't even a price sticker on it today. Last time I was there, I think it was marked down to 99 cents. I believe that's the last step before they toss them.
The Eureka is a new addition, as it wasn't there last time I was. That was marked $9.99.
The Eureka has its hose, but I don't think any of the tools.
The Dirt Devil has no hose or tools.

Nice!
I'm at the point where I really can't bring anything else home. Otherwise, and maybe I'm crazy, I probably would have dragged the Dirt Devil home.
I've never owned anything Dirt Devil, except for a toy version. And, the blue color appeals to me. Of course, I'd probably never be able to find the hose and tools for it. But, it actually looks like it would clean up nice.
And that Eureka just looks huge! I was surprised at how big it looked!

I think every collector should have a Dirt Devil 103 style hand vac if they wanted a Dirt Devil for their collection, those were really popular back in the day and they're one of the best cleaning hand vacs ever made.

Darn - I saw a DD 103 at Goodwill last week - maybe I shoulda got it.
Oh, well - I already have a much newer one (that has the useless air-driven brushroll)..

I have seen those 103s a few times while thrifting. I think I've even seen one or two with the box.
I always look at them, and I'm tempted, but I haven't had one follow me home yet.
One week, there was a Hoover Brush Vac, with its box. Really good condition too. But, even after I carried it around the store for a while, I ended up resisting.
It's not easy, but I really have to make an effort to control my buying urges.

I rescued a Dirt Devil Featherlite like that off a dumpster one time. It needed a bag and a belt. I kept it for awhile, then donated it to the church I was attending at the time. They kept it for a couple of years, then replaced it with some bagless POS.

'bagged' vacuum cleaner...

human's profile picture
A few years ago, I found a 'bagged' vacuum at a thrift store. It was an Electrolux Epic 3500SR upright. When I first saw it, it was in a plastic garbage bag, with just the handle sticking out of the top. I recognized it by the handle and took a closer look, expecting to see something really gross inside of the bag, but it was just moderately dusty. I tried to talk myself out of it, but ended up buying it a few days later for $3. The thing had no price tag on it, and when I asked an employee about it, he went and got a manager, who had a pricing gun in her hand, and randomly slapped a price tag on it without touching the price adjustment knobs, then she looked at it and told me what it said. I didn't argue the point and made a bee-line for the checkout.

Post# 465800 , Reply# 8   9/3/2023 at 17:21 (248 days old) by jade_angel (Fort Collins, CO)

I spied a bunch just yesterday: A Simplicity Jill, a Cirrus (not sure which model), a Riccar Supraquick, a Kenmore Progressive with a power nozzle (not sure exactly which model, but it looks like one of the last of the Panasonics), a Eureka Imperial upright, a Kenmore bagged clean-air upright, and the star of the show, an Electrolux Guardian Encore with all the shinies. I wanted a bunch of 'em, but ended up with just the Electrolux.

The Eureka Imperial was really nice, basically a Sanitaire with a Eureka label, but it had apparently been used to suck up wissy cat litter, and not only stunk of pee, but was also rusted halfway to heck and gone, so I passed on that. I almost went with the Kenmore canister too, since it was in good shape (just dirty, but not AFAICT stinky) and really cheap, but didn't think I could spare the space.

When I got the Electrolux home, I found it was a little dirty, but in good shape otherwise. One of the wand latches was broken, so I glued the wands together - normally I wouldn't, but frankly, the creaky, plasticky wands of this era of Electrolux need a little help, so I thought it was no great loss. The clips on the HEPA mushroom filter were all cracked too, so it popped off the first time I powered on. But otherwise, so far so good!

There was that Eureka The Boss bagged upright too, plus some bagless Chinesium, but none of those were terribly interesting.

I have a slightly older Imperial than that, same color, but different bag design. You're right that it is about 85 percent the same as a Sanitaire, especially the blue Professional series, designed for household use. I've also got a Sanitaire S645 that's about 30 years newer than my Eureka, and except for the color schemes, there are only three major differences: the Eureka has a sliding Rugulator height control, instead of the Dial-A-Nap knob, a two-speed power switch on the handle, instead of a single speed switch on the motor unit, and the handle, which is painted white instead of chrome plated, has metal cord hooks, spot-welded into place, as opposed to the plastic ones that snap onto the Sanitaire's handle.

That Eureka Boss Smartvac is a good machine. Full size attachments, two wands and shuts off the brushroll for hard floors or when the handle is upright for tool use.

Love those European Panasonics! I wish we had more of them here. Anyways, last week on the 6th I picked up another bagged vacuum. It's a white Sebo X4. Although I didn't get it at a thrift store but just thought I'd share of what I've gotten recently.

I don't know why, but I've been having the opposite of buyers remorse for NOT buying the Oreck.
I know, it's not really anything special. But, I'm a sucker for special editions and such.
I'm going to go back to the store Monday, and see if it's still there. If it's gone, then I guess it wasn't meant to be.
I know it needs at least a couple of repairs. If I get it, I'm sure I'll be posting questions about how to fix stuff. It's also pretty dirty, but that's the part I kind of enjoy.
Can the outer bags on these be hand washed, like I've now done with a Kirby and a Royal?

For $15, that's not bad for an Oreck and the price for the parts are so reasonable. If it's still there, I'd say go for it. These are super easy to fix and service, you can even take the outer bag off and wash it in the washing machine. Or hand wash it if you prefer (washing machines do a better job). Other than that, they're nice vacuums for what they are. I think these 40th Anniversary versions are a great addition for any vacuum collection.

Thanks, Alex.
I'm weak. I found out that the store was open until 7:00 this evening, so I didn't wait until Monday.
Not only was it still there, but it was half price! With rounding up to the next dollar, I walked it out the door for $8!
I don't know exactly what it will end up needing. But, I got to plug it in at the store, and it ran great!

lol I did the same ho-humming about when I got my Oreck 40th Edition as well. When I went back like....2 weeks later on 50% off day, there it sat, and I grabbed it for $7. On mine the bag has a slight permanent crumple to it, I'm wondering if it would be starched out, or washed?

Orecks are probably the best vacuum to learn repairs on. You can take the entire vacuum apart with just 1 philips screwdriver, all the parts are easy to see what they do and how they work. It is a very simple vacuum. It kind of all goes together like LEGO bricks, there's no wrong way to assemble it, as it will only fit together one way.

Do you know what brand that bright green canister is? Maybe Kenmore? I like the color. It's unfortunate that someone wrote on it, probably in Sharpie.

The bright green one was a Kenmore. It's actually just a grease pen they use to write prices on some things like vacuums, so it thankfully comes off fairly easily!

Great find!
An orange one, a little older than that, is one of my dream machines. It was my family's first canister vac with a power nozzle.
It was before they put the cover over the on-board tools. And the style of the power nozzle was a little different. But the control panel looked nearly identical to this one.
Congratulations!

It will make me feel very sad if you eventually post a picture of it getting hauled away for scrap. But, there's no way I can get to you to get it. And, I'm sure shipping costs would be pretty steep.

Eureka

I have several power nozzles that might have gone with this model. Hose and attachments should be easy to find. I would only want $10-20 but there would be packing and shipping. It's leaving soon one way or another.

Nice find, Alex!
In the town where I grew up, which is about a half hour from where I am now, someone had a free Dual Sanitronic 80 on Craigslist. I know it's not a thrift store, but it kind of tied in with your Kirby deal.
I'm saying it's a DS 80, but I'm honestly not sure. It's green. Isn't the DS 80 the green Kirby?
Being the hoarder that I am, I was very tempted. I also love green. But, I resisted.

I saw what I believe was my first thrift store sighting of a Hoover Windtunnel. I'm not up on my ability to identify them, and I didn't get a picture. It was blue, looked like it had some bells and whistles, and it was self-propelled. They wanted $15.

It was a good day for bagged vacs at one of my local stores!
They had an older Oreck upright.
An older Kenmore canister.
And, if you want to consider them bagged, a Dirt Devil 103, and a possibly Craftsman wet/dry “shop vac”. I know you can use bags in some of those.
Also, I realize that “Shop Vac” is a brand name. But, it’s also what a lot of people call any of that style wet/dry vacuum.

Today was Kenmore upright day!

justjunque's profile picture
I hit three stores this afternoon. One, I hadn't been to in a while.
I spotted not one, but two Kenmore uprights.
The dark blue Whispertone was only $6.99, and looked very clean. The downside was that the bag compartment door wouldn't latch. That's why there's duct tape on it. That one looked very Panasonic to me.
The Progressive must be a newer model, I'm guessing. It looked so big, I thought it was a carpet shampooer at first. That one was $30. Someone bought it shortly after I walked away from it.

I'll post a picture of each. But, since I took them with my phone, they're going to come out sideways. I apologize. If I could lug my iPad around with me, the pictures would post in the correct orientation.

Oh man!

I'm glad someone claimed the Kenmore Progressive, but you would love one too! $30 is a bit steep, but worth it if it'd been maintained correctly. I have one and I feel like it was one of the best machines they ever released. It's essentially the US version of the Panasonic Icon. The motor that drives the brush roll is pure torque, and clocks in at a shocking 170V DC. There's a little planetary transmission that couples to the drive shaft, reducing the speed and increasing the insane carpet grabbing power even more 😂
The main motor sounds like a 747 taking off, even when they're healthy, and the suction and airflow are incredibly intense. Altogether it makes for one of the scariest machines ever introduced to the market, and I love mine. The dirt sensor is dead on accurate too. Some have mentioned durability issues, but if you're nice to them, they're fantastic. Plus you get double HEPA filtration with the cloth bags and the cartridge exhaust filter!

Anyway, that's my rave about the Progressive 🤣 I'll have to make a video if it'd be of any interest to y'all. I love em

I have one of those Dirt Devil 103s. Got it from a junk pile. It runs good, the only thing is it is missing whatever goes in the hole in the front. Probably for an external hose. I assume some sort of rubber plug goes in the hole. I just taped over it.

I would've gladly bought that Whispertone, in my humble opinion one of the best Kenmore uprights ever sold. Even better than that overpriced and overly rated Progressive. Very basic, simple to use and repair, and super powerful. That latch would've been so easy to fix. The Progressive is alright, I have three of them including that purple one. The Direct Drive uprights I think was one of the vacuums that went downhill for Kenmore. The beltless motor design was proven problematic for Panasonic hence that was the main reason why they discontinued them for themselves, but Sears for whatever reason really liked the design so much (probably from their ratings that Consumer Reports gave which probably boosted their sales) that they had Panasonic still make them for the Kenmores. Dirt sensor lights were also problematic, my black one quit working. And from my experience they don't clean as well as the belted models including that Whispertone. The only thing that I do like better about the Progressive over the Whispertone is the switch on top of the handle.

We did had the Panasonic Icon here in the states but they were known as the Performance Plus Platinum.

Absolutely valid

Luckily Panasonic made a lot of different designs so there was something for everyone 😂
I've had good luck with my Progressive, I mostly just like to show it off cause it's different than most vacuums.

And you're right, I forgot about the Performance Plus.
Such is the nature of collectors, everyone's taste varies

The Whispertone did look really clean. And, the price was certainly reasonable. I didn't plug it in, but it had the standard "Tested. Works" sticker on it. So far, any vacuum I've bought from that store has, in fact, worked.
I was a little tempted. But, once in a while, I do find the self control to not buy every vacuum that I find. Not often enough, but once in a while. LOL

Deja vu!

justjunque's profile picture
I hit two thrift stores today, and only saw one vacuum. Ironically, it was a nearly identical Kenmore Progressive Direct Drive to the one I spotted a couple of weeks ago. It was the same purple color and everything.
I took a little closer look at this one. Man! That's a huge brushroll on those things!
Unlike the previous one, this one appeared to be missing some on-board tools or something. It was clean, though.
Exactly like the previous one, this store wanted $30 for this one too. I'd have to really feel like it was something I absolutely had to have, in order to pay that much.
