Hello,

I am not an expert on vacuum cleaners and am hoping someone can assist me. I collect pretty much anything vintage and I found a nearly mint, all original Hoover Convertible model 714 in “sunset orange”. I am driving a pretty fair distance to get it so I’m trying to educate myself a little. I read on this site that it’s from 1967-1969 and that it is a “promotional model”. What exactly is a promotional model? Is it a cheaper version of some other model made to be sold by a certain retailer? Is there anything else significant about this machine? I googled this model and didn’t find much information on it.

Thank you for your help.

"Promotional Model Meaning"

From my knowledge it basically means that it is a special or rare model that was only sold at certain stores at certain times

Promotional cleaners were budget models. they were meant as budget introductory models, some of them had extremely long production runs with very high numbers made and sold at many stores. SOME were exclusives, or run for a short time (usually due to unpopular color/slow selling or dept store exclusives)

the 714 had a very low production run of about 45,000 units. the color makes this model desirable and the fact it has a headlight. but the u4047 in 1974/5 also had this color but was a cheaper model without a headlight.

I also think you know this cleaner is rare. I don't know anyone that would make a 500 + mile round trip for a single vacuum cleaner that was common or didn't have knowledge on the cleaner to some degree. that 714 was listed in wichita, ks.

here are the spec sheets for the 714. this is a double sided litho print that woudlve been in hoover or dept stores of the day to describe the cleaner.

Thank you. I was not aware that the 714 had any particular rarity. As to Wichita I go that direction with work but it is still out of the way to some degree.

This machine seems to have every option that a deluxe model has. Full bumper, headlight, zipper bag, handle grip. Only thing it might not have is the longer cord. Were promotional models cheaper built or substandard in some other way perhaps to make it a budget option?

Thanks Everyone

Looks like the 714 is a standard convertible with the same quality and basically the same features as any other convertible. Thanks everyone for your help.
