This is a cross post from AW...

I have an 8 year old Jazz upright that lately sounds a little louder and smells like it's overheating. There are no apparent clogs, I just installed a brand new bag and HEPA filter. The old HEPA was gray which was unusual. All the previous filters looked brand new when they were replaced. I'm the original owner and have only ever used genuine Miele bags and filters. The inside of the vacuum looks immaculate so there were no leaking or sealing issues with the previous bags.

Is it possible the carbon brushes or the motor is going? 8 years seems kind of young for a Miele vacuum to die. Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I only use it once every few weeks as I've been primarily using my Dyson cordless.

I would bring it to a local dealer and see what they say.

I have a Jazz and after months of use my HEPA filter never looked new… always grey. But still functioning like the day I got it years later. Hopefully you resolve your issue.

Couple of a times a month for 8 years isn't too much usage. The HEPA filter on the exhaust catches carbon dust from the motor. It is normal to be black/gray. If it's excessively blackened when it was not in the weeks prior at a rapid pace, and you don't think you dropped the vacuum or caused any damage to it, it would be worth a look to service the motor and put fresh grease/oil, check the armature and commutator, brushes, etc. A hot motor from worn out grease/oil can drag and cause more resistance which makes more heat and might translate to the hotter feel/smell to it. Make sure to check your belt as well and make sure the belt is good and not loose or slack.

The belt has NOTHING to do with motor exhaust since this machine has two separate motors.

No Miele dealer is going to service a Miele Vortex motor. They will replace them. It's possible some dirt is in the fan throwing it off balance but that's as far as I'll go with one. If you take it apart down to the motor and look inside, there shouldn't be any dust on the field.

I would have to listen to it to see what the issue is. See if you can post a Youtube video of it running and I might be able to tell you.

Thanks for all the replies

The motor hasn't smelled like it's been overheating since I changed the HEPA filter. I think it may have just been suffering from a clogged filter that was choking the motor.

I saw a youtube of another Miele where the guy removed the HEPA and it was darker than mine and everyone here says that's normal so that makes me feel better.

The machine hasn't been dropped or damaged. I do think it's getting a tad bit louder though so I will try to post a video to share. I don't think there are any issues with the belt as that sounds just fine.

I know someone who has a couple of used Miele uprights of that vintage in good working order if you are looking to replace the machine, depending on the cost to repair your current one. Feel free to send me an email, MitchellFox98@aol.com
