My neighbors put their Dyson dc33 out for free pickup. I took it…the brush roll runs but stalls on carpet and I can stop it with my hand. Is there a belt to replace or is it something more? Thanks! The switch for it does shut it off and turn it back on again correctly. Any help is appreciated.

Jon

Ok some progress

A YouTube video showed me how to change the clutch and belts as an assembly. But I guess my question is…if the brush roll does indeed turn, but just not fast and is stoppable by hand…then is the clutch bad or just the belts. I can get belts for a quarter of the price of the clutch. But for some reason the guy in the video though it wasn’t worth trying to just replace belts and bought the whole clutch belts assembly.

Any thoughts? This machine is in good shape otherwise so would be nice to fix it but not sure I want to spend $40 if I only need belts for $9.

If there's no grinding and it doesn't take much restistance to stop the brushroll, then you can get away with replacing the belts. It can be a pain since there are many screws/parts involved. You'll need a long T15 Torx to remove the 3 screws holding the clutch cover and a T10 torx to take apart the clutch. This video is a good reference. You can buy a tool to help install the belts better, but unless you're doing 20 of them, you can get away without it.

Yes and thank you

There is no grinding at all and it doesn’t take much resistance to stop the brush. I can stop it with my hand. Generally the vac is in great shape. The filters are clean and nothing else is broken or abused and our neighbors really keep their house and things very nice. I’ll get the belts and hopefully it will be good to go. My niece has little money and goes through vacs quickly so would prefer to spend the belt money and give the vac to her so she doesn’t have to spend money on cheap Bissell stuff that clog and she throws away. I had given her a Dyson dc10 I had rescued in the past that needed a hose. Spent the money on a generic hose replacement but who knows what she did to the vac…about a year or so later, the cyclone part of the dust bin had a hole in it, the handle latch for the dust bin was broken off and a rubber utility bungee cord was wrapped around the vac to hold the bin on and the brush roll wouldn’t spin and there was just grinding. At that point I « cut the cord » to use on something else, took my replacement hose off, kept the attachments I had also purchased and threw the rest in the trash, though the motor still worked. I guess I could have kept the filters but I did not. That one wasn’t in as good of shape as this one is when I received it so hopefully this one will last her longer once I replace the belts. I have a feeling the kids used the other one as some sort of play toy. They do look tempting in that manner.

The belt from the motor to the clutch has stretched out. A Bissell 1699 pump belt works perfectly. Try to turn the belt from the clutch to the brush upside down without removing it (it's very difficult to replace this one). Turning it upside down will give more 'grip' and should allow the brush bar to spin correctly and clean the rug.

Hmm

That’s a good idea dysonman1. I did order new belts and they have arrived. Now I just need to find the time to fiddle with it.

Jon, while you're at it I would also pop the end caps off the brushroll and check the brushroll bearings. Back a few years ago I found a DC33 at the side of the road with a "works, needs cleaning" sign on it. Turns out the brushroll didn't turn AT ALL....at first I thought it was bad belts in the clutch, but it turned out to be a bad brushroll bearing. Lubed it up, put it back together and ordered a spare clutch and brushroll bearing to have on hand for spares. Since these clutched Dysons are such a pain to change the brushroll or clutch, it might be a good idea while you have it opened up :-)
