Hi folks. I bought an Aerus Lux Classic from ebay a week ago and it arrived a couple of days ago. It's white with the gray/taupe side moldings. It's very clean and has nary a mark on it. It's quiet and has great suction. I'm not crazy about the plastic, but it seems to be solid and well made. Both the vacuum and the power nozzle are quieter than my Lux Guardian Ultra. I really like both machines even though I miss the really quiet and powerful Electroluxes I grew up with. By comparison, I feel that the models made by Electrolux now are inferior to the Aerus machines.

Most of the Aerus LUX models are Electrolux's low end cleaners from the 1980's. They are not new designs. The LUX Classic was the Electrolux LE back in the late 80s or early 90s which was the bottom of the barrel model. They aren't improving them at all. The attachments are even the same.

It's such a waste that Aerus wants nothing to do with Electrolux. They could put so much more effort into making new Electrolux vacuums with modern features, design improvements, and they just dumped them off.

My 'new' Lux Classic

Hi. Thanks for the information. I had no knowledge of this. I do wonder why the Lux machines mirror the Electrolux machines so completely, and this could be the reason. I never understood the name sale either. I do like my Guardian Ultra and Classic, but agree that they are both a far cry from the kind of vacuums we knew from decades earlier. Like most things, they've been cheapened and their features and quality are lacking, but their prices keep going up.

First of all, welcome to the forum, and I appreciate your passion for Aerus and Electrolux vacuums as a collector.

I agree with you - the machines made by Electrolux AB and sold under the Electrolux name in North America are inferior in quality to the Aerus and Electrolux machines we grew up with. With regards to the name change, Electrolux was bought by Joseph P Urso, and one of the first things he did was start to strip mine the company of it's assets - he sold off Electro Motor, the motor manufacturing division, the bag manufacturing division, and the name Electrolux back to Electrolux AB of Sweden so they could enter the North American marketplace. He also bought TriStar as well, and changed the corporate name to Aerus Holdings LLC.

Mr Urso has proven himself to be only obsessed with how much money he can milk from the company - the only newly designed products the company has actually come out with since Mr Urso purchased the company are the TriStar EXL, and the Guardian Ultra. Everything else has been outsourced and added to the company's product offerings, such as the Guardian Platinum, the machine is entirely outsourced and the hose/wands/powerhead/tools added to it.

Also, as Huskyvacs pointed out, the other 2 canisters are old designs. The Lux Classic is a Electrolux LE / Ambassador back from the 80s and 90s, and the Lux Legacy is a Electrolux Epic 6500 SR. All they did was change the plastic moulding slightly to allow for the change to the single stage JEI motor they now use, and made some improvements to the powerhead motor, belts and brushroll.

Personally, if I was looking to buy a new vacuum and was focused on a new Aerus, I would much rather buy a used Electrolux plastic body canister on Ebay, buy a new motor for it, take it into a vac shop to have it installed, and add whatever is needed to complete it like a hose or wand. If you do that, you will have a machine that will last 20+ years. Furthermore, the motor will be of superior quality to the single stage JEI motor since the Electro Motor is a double stage motor, and actually there is a version that will pull a whopping 117" waterlift - it will match the motor in the Guardian Platinum for performance! So buying and rebuilding a plastic body Electrolux would be a far better deal in my books.

Huskyvacs - I think Aerus was smart NOT to join Electrolux AB and have them come out with new designs and "improvements". The reason Electrolux AB left the North American marketplace a few years back is people found out they were all flash and not a quality product. Once people found out after they bought their vacuum they had been duped and this wasn't the same classic Electrolux as Mom and Grandma had, and NOT the same quality as the old ones, they switched to other brands like Miele.

My 'new' Lux Classic

Hi kirbylux77. Thank you for the warm welcome and the information you provided. I know too little about the name change situation and was most interested in it. I am a major vintage Electrolux fan (since I was a kid) and own and use several. I got interested in Aerus machines only recently when I found a beautiful Lux Guardian Ultra and then decided to get the companion Classic. Both are white and in excellent condition and I enjoy using them, although I recognize that the quality I'd come to expect in my vintage models is sadly absent. That being said, I think they are really good vacuums and are at least similar to the Electroluxes of old. I own 1 Electrolux currently, a Special Edition, which I like very much. It prompted me to look into Aerus models, in fact. I did buy an Electrolux Ambassador III, but didn't like it and gave it away. It seemed to be of lower quality than my Special Edition. I think I'll just stick with what I have now.

Lux Guardian Platinum

Hi kirbylux77. I re-read your reply and realized I forgot to note that the current top-of-the-line Lux vacuum, the Guardian Platinum, is not even made by Aerus. That explains why the colors on the machine and the colors of the hose and attachments don't match. I can't believe it. Who makes it for Aerus? Is it a good vacuum? I see one on ebay now for around $1150, only used twice per the ad. I generally stay away from high-end models of most things anymore due to all the problems with computers and circuit boards, etc.

The name is what it is because of company sale...

Electrolux AB of Sweden was corporate owner of many appliances and floor care companies over the years. Over time they have sold off various lines.
Electrolux vacuums as we know it was one of the first to go. I'd have to do research but I wanna say it was around 2003 that the break off took place. The Electrolux name got sold back to Electrolux AB and Aerus LLC came about. The same classic design of machines is still around, they have done very little design changes over the years.

Almost immediately after the separation, Electrolux AB deployed a new cheapie line Electrolux vacuum line. They were all an orange/red color for many colors that in a way resembled high end Eurekas. The design was really no surprise to that description because ElectroluxAB owned Sanitaire, Eureka and Beam central vac systems. That Electrolux vac line has essentially disappeared now.

In the past few years Eureka was sold to a company called Midea and Sanitaire was recently purchased by Bissell. I don't remember who owns Beam now.

Well the machine are warranted

I se all the negativity surrounding the new machines. Yes, Joe Urso is focused on money, no doubt. I recently had a conversation with a commercial sales rep on the air cleaning side. He said they are relying on the « old » customers who like their Electrolux’s and repeat buyers for the Aerus vacuum line. So little changes keep the old customers happy and repeat buying. They have added the platinum to update things and the filtration is excellent. The warranty is also one of the best in the industry at 15 years! That’s a long time! They kept the same quality attachments that people are used to for the power nozzle and rug and floor tool and combination dusting brush upholstery tool which is an all time customer favorite. Some things are best left unchanged rather than screwed up in an effort to improve. They have 3 canister models to appeal to the buyers who want the latest and greatest with the platinum, then the Lux Legacy which provides customers with an improved version of the Canadian basic model, and finally the basic classic model which has less bells and whistles but keeps most all of the quality items that users of the older machines have come to love in a light weight package.

My only complaint is that the accessory wands would be nice in metal instead of plastic and the combination rug and floor tool should be standard with all 3 models but all of this is available for any model so negotiations can be made to improve or customize any model to have your favorite accessories.

As far as Electrolux by Eureka goes….that wasn’t good and now they aren’t selling anything but stick vacs in the US.

One can even buy a Lux Legacy and equip it with the original style hose and wands from a Lux Classic if they like that setup better for example.

Covid has taken The air cleaning business by storm and Aerus has the only air cleaner that kills Covid in the air and on surfaces…they are focused on that primarily these days. The name change hasn’t helped them make the product easier to sell I am told even in the commercial market. People know the original Electrolux…it would be in Urso’s best interest to buy the rights to the name back in the US for that reason. He would make back all the money and then plenty more in increased sales. But stubbornness of the old execs remains the issue.

Aerus doesn’t do much to advertise and hence Shark and Dyson have overtaken the vacuum cleaner business.
