I knew the original motor was toast based on the grinding sound and extreme difficulty in spinning the fan (bearings were shot beyond repair, and Eureka/Sanitaire bearings aren't the easiest to service), however, the bag, base, hood and handle were in excellent condition and I knew that 2spd Sanitaires exist, and thus my plan was to throw a 2spd Sanitaire motor into this machine and make it a sleeper.

However, it seems like the 2spd Sanitaire (QuietClean SC889) has the same part # for the motor as the single speed 7A Sanitaires -- 5435217, which means that the motor is being stepped down by some other means (maybe a stepdown board), and not thru the windings as was the case with the old OE motor. What gives? Is this an error (wrong part #) or am I missing something here?

How are modern two speed Sanitaires put together? What do I REALLY need to make this 2090A run again, which has everything but a motor?

Hmmm

I have 5 sanitaires and wasn't aware there was a 2-speed model. I'm wondering if the two speed is a Eureka made Sanitaire or a newer made by Bissell or other. I'm guessing that this two speed is really an ESP Eureka motor that adds a half amp when you slide the button on the handle forward or backward. It's a good strong motor if it is an ESP motor.

Yeah, Sanitaire actually has a 2-speed for sale

It's called the Quiet Clean SC899. It has a switch on the loop handle to bump it down to a lower speed. Probably for hotels, hospitals, etc so they can clean hallways and common areas without disturbing anyone.

However, the Eureka ESP had a true 2-speed motor as it had the additional wire coming from the field coil. The Sanitaire Quiet Kleen seems to have the exact same motor in the SC886 and other non-5A Sanitaires, which is a 7A 1-speed motor, as the part # for the Quiet Kleen motor is the same for a standard 1-speed 7A unit such as the SC886--only two wires are coming out of the field coil in the 7A motor rather than the three in the ESP 2-speed.

I can't find a wiring diagram for the SC899 to confirm what's going on under the hood. I almost think that the part # listed for the SC899 motor is an error.

It can get confusing

I've got an SC888 Quick Clean red single speed 7amp Eureka motor. It's at least 15 years old. They still make these and I see them listed as classics. The red line were always the SC Sanitaire Commercial cleaners and the blue line used to be for domestic home use. It was a little dressier than the reds were. That's changed since Eureka sold. Now I see black models and blue models called Sanitaire and are made by different companies.

Quiet Clean/Quick Clean, different machines and I could see the confusion getting parts mixed up. Have you tried Hesko Inc. for a schematic of your model?
