Am I to understand that the older brush rolls were supposed to have a round felt pad to provide protection from dust getting to the bearings and to hold oil for same?

If so, can anyone tell me where to get them? I was thinking of maybe an obscure source like those felt pads used to place around battery terminals.

"-pad-"

You may be thinking of the foam(not felt)for the later PN-4.It was to help prevent build up of strings, etc and NOT for oil.It could be used on both ends of PN 1,2 & 4 brushes. Not used on PN 5.
