So, someone did actually buy one of these!

Looks never used. Interesting friction drive via contact from the separator nut to the rubber cone once the motor head is latched onto the Polichamp.

Do I vaguely recall a very old Hoover floor polisher attachment that worked similarly?

yes waswith the D2 or D3 to make it in a polisher seen it before .
