Those old DD commercials from the 90's include Golden Retriever puppies. Can someone explain why they did that? I ask because I used to have a Golden Retriever when I was growing up.

It's true. The mid and late 90's were popular with new suburban families and "the perfect family" would include a Golden Retreiver as the dog. Think Air Bud. They also show up easily in the stage shots and look cute.

It's like in the 1970's and early 80's practically every single TV sitcom and movie had an old english sheepdog in it, and now you never see them.

I would have to agree with the marketing aspect as well.
There's the old marketing adage that "sex sells".
Well, arguably, so does cute.
I suppose there's also the possibility that they wanted to plant the seed in people's minds that their vacuums were good for cleaning up pet hair, or when little Fido knocks over a potted plant.
And, like Husky said, it sort of hits people in the feels with the image of a happy, wholesome, family home.

I don't see any other explanation for your question.

I also wonder if any other vacuum brands included pets in their old commercials. Kind of adds to the retro aesthetic.
