Hello once again, everyone! Sorry I haven't posted in a while as life got in the way.

I hope you'll join me for the story of how I got a Kirby Heritage II for free.

It was a muggy Thursday afternoon. I had just picked up my truck from getting its AC system fixed and was riding high on high hopes and maybe a little freon. After going garage sale hunting and picking up a trio of TV-recorded VHS tapes - one of my other hobbies - I decide to head north out of the county to the local Goodwill. Goodwill was yet an untapped market for me since I hadn't gone to one since about 2014. I headed to the furniture section and there it was - a dusty Kirby Heritage II.

They wanted $14.99 for it. A pretty good price for a Kirby these days, even if it's a little newer than what I like.

After raiding the toy bin of diecast cars - another one of my other hobbies - I go to the checkout and pay $11 and leave. Wait, what? $11? The vacuum was $15! Let's take a look at the receipt together, shall we?

Yep, they only charged me for the cars. Free Kirby! Woohoo!

Left profile. Note the missing hubcap - I assume that happened before it got donated. No way it would have rattled loose in the back of my truck.

Right profile. Slight scratches in the metal are visible if you look closely at the brush roll nozzle.

Serial number. It was built in August of 1985 in Andrews, Texas. Happy early birthday! Strange for a Texas-built unit to wind up in Wisconsin. Then again, I have an old pickup from a dealership in Dallas.

Headlight assembly. It comes with a helpful infographic for first-time Kirby owners. Wish I had that when I got my first, lol.

A hubcap with a sticker on it. I assume these are to keep the finish of them, kind of like what they do for electronics? I'm surprised they're still on if that's the case.

An old tag that was taped to the cord. Guessing the previous owner ordered a new one from Kirby at some point?

Plug. I'm not good enough to tell how recent it is just by looking at it, but it looks like the same vintage as the vacuum to me.

It had to be an older repop as it has some electrical tape from the previous owner.

Scuff in the bag. It has to be my worst condition Kirby so far, but that's okay! We like a little patina here.

Bonus picture before I disappear again: a Tornado in one of the local car garages here. Might be a 1978 model as that's when the garage was opened.

Can't beat that deal...

That machine's a great find, even for the $15 they were originally asking. Normally when I say 'you stole that one,' I'm speaking metaphorically but this time, you really did! I've occasionally had a cashier misread a price tag at Goodwill, like when I got the final season of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine on DVD for 99 cents, instead of $2.99. But how does one miss ringing up an item that physically large?

I think the Heritage/Legend machines are my favorite Kirbys, but I'm really a sucker for the Heritage 1HD's bright orange bag. I picked up a Heritage II Legend at Goodwill about two or three years ago for $15 in absolutely pristine condition, except it was missing the cord. It cost me about $20 for a new one, but that's okay.

The price tag on the cord for yours reminds me of when I bought my Electrolux Diamond Jubilee canister, also at Goodwill, for $10 with a generic hose that had a $69 price tag on it. I pointed it out to the cashier as she was ringing me up and told her she was giving me one heck of a deal on the whole machine with the hose, wand and power nozzle.

I think it's because Goodwill does on-the-job job training, and they hire people that have never cashiered before, the odds at them missing something or screwing something up on the sale are very high because they are training as they work with real people. Also if they are at the end of their shift and ready to go home, they will usually rush through an order and not be as fastidious as they normally would be and skip things. Goodwill has lax punishment for this as well, so there isn't really any risk to them if they mess up.

I've put things on the counter many times and the cashier would get distracted by someone else or checking a price that they forget other items and then just put them in the bag thinking they scanned them already. I just consider it a free bonus when that happens. Other times they don't see the price tag on an item and then just make up their own price and it ends up being cheaper than the price tag's value. Sometimes I forget something in the cart and by the time I notice it, it's too late and they already finalized the sale.

My Heritage IIHD also has the pink cling wrap on the hubcaps still too, it's funny how people never notice those and take them off.

My conscience would bother me too much to allow the cashier's error to give me a steal of a deal; I'd have to be honest and say something.

Heritage's

Once you get your Kirby all shined up to your specs and use it for a while, I believe

your going to really like it. Heritages are a special breed. The last series that

didn't have a transmission. A friend bought a new Heritage II Legend and when I

got a chance to run it I was really impressed. They seem so refined. Many people

consider the Heritages to be one of their best ever. Glad to see it went to a

collector! Billy

Nice! That Heritage 2 is in great shape.

It looks like some putty type material was applied to the base of the bag's hose?

I'll have to post a pic of a orange bag Heritage 84 that I found stuffed into a consignment store's basement corner. 50% off $24. Someone duct taped the base of its bag hose and I suspect there is a crack or air leak to fix.

Heritage II Legend

Sharing my everyday-use 1988 Heritage II Legend. A sentimental vacuum as it was the FIRST Kirby I refurbished. I chose NOT to buff metal and enjoy as-is. For all-around use and vacuum suction, I think it was one of Kirby's finest models. I am lucky to own many Kirby vacuums from a 4C to an Avalir2, but this H2 is my favorite.
