Hey guys I have a Stark shake out bag that I use on my 993 Royal that is in beautiful condition but I screwed up and broke the plastic strips in the rim of the bag that forms the flap of the bag. I have removed the broken strips from around the rim but don't know how to repair it. I tried running it without the plastic but it immediately blows out of the metal clamp. Does anyone have an idea on how to fix this or does anyone have one of these bags they may be willing to sell or part with.

The Bag looks like this one except darker blue with stark commercial on it instead of Royal

What I have done is to take a Bounty or any other paper towel and fold it into a 1-inch strip the width of the bag top and insert it in between. Then put the bag clamp back on. You have to adjust the amount of folds to allow for the clamp to slide easily on. You can also use a piece of felt to do the same thing.

Those plastic strips you refer to may have just broken due to becoming brittle with age. Though I haven't tried it, you may be able to use "boning" which you can buy at JoAnn's Fabric and Crafts. Boning was used in the dresses Victorian women wore which formed the circular hoops. You would have to measure the section of the bag folds and perhaps score the boning with an Exacto knife to create the creases which make the folds bend. I believe boning comes in various widths.

Thanks for the idea of using boning ,I found some extremely heavy duty zip ties at work which may have the same effect. Luckily the awesome people at Harolds sewing and vacuums in spokane wa just so happened to have a new old stock Royal commercial bag that I can use while I fix my Stark bag.

Stephan,

Another awesome find... this bag they had for you was from a late 1970s/early 1980s Royal heavy-duty commercial machine (think models 611 or 608).

Stephan,

What you're trying to fix: that would be a rare sighting, again on models such as 311, 3-153, 3-602, 606, 606A, 608 and 611 during the late '70s and early '80s. It had been available from Royal as part no. 2-060640-239.

~Ben
