I looked through their lineup a while back and the uprights do look like reengineered commercial vacs. I find their stick vacs to be a bit of mystery why they went with a noncyclonic system that remind me of super cheap hand vacs of the past. Perhaps in the commercial world they don't care about filtration or knocking out filters every time they have to use the vacuum in favor of weight. Even more curious is that they offer a cyclonic attachment that seems kind of like "whoops" and they had to add it. Overall just a very odd lineup as every vac has a different design and are likely all battery retrofits. It does look like Makita has put in a legitimate effort at getting into the commercial segment with their 18V (36V X2) lineup. Quality and readily available Makita battery packs may be a strong enough selling point to make it work. I would have considered buying one of their stick vacs if they actually put some effort into making one that has decent filtration and good dirt separation that doesn't solely rely on the filter.

In the world of tool brands making vacuums I'll be curious to see if TTI releases some good vacuums under the Ryobi and Milwaukee brands. The Hoover Blades are already released under the Hart brand (both brands owned by TTI) at Walmart. Ryobi and Milwaukee both have released stick vacs with motorized brush heads but they are abysmal compared to what TTI has released through Hoover. I kind of wonder if TTI left their Ryobi and Milwaukee engineering teams to make vacuums for each brand hoping maybe they make some improvements they can make across all their brands including Hoover. However, it seems Milwaukee and Ryobi didn't do well.

Ryobi used to make Kenmore's uprights in the 80s. Wonder if we will see revived Kenmore twin fan molds in some new way?

I'm actually shocked to see them branching out into home use vacuums. I would have fully expected some workshop based vacuum or a shop-vac style, not a full fledged upright. The color scheme reminds me so much of the Amway ClearkTrak. Back to the 90s!

I actually am quite intrigued by Ryobi’s cordless canister shopvac…what a great idea for cleaning cars and campers and boats that are parked far from electrical plugs…it’s an interesting area of cleaner development to watch. Far more powerful than those little cordless dustbusters and other handvacs. See link below….

Milwaukee makes a cordless, bagless backpack vacuum-was intended for jobsite cleanup. And of course the smaller cordless "toolbox" sized wet-dry vacuums from DeWalt and Milwaukee.Since I have a collection of both Milwaukee and DeWalt cordless tools-thinking of adding these toolbox vacuums. And these are meant to be used with their tacking packout toolkit cases.

Interesting design…..

I've attached the link directly to the Makita page for this model.

The diameter of the on board hose seems small compared to others. I suppose that’s to enhance the suction. I also noticed in other pics that the brush roll resembles something one would find on a robotic vacuum. It’s nearly identical to the brush roll on my Neato D7. I wouldn’t expect this to have aggressive agitation on all carpet types, but at least the lack of resistance of the brush roll won’t shorten the run time of the battery. I’m sure this will do well in a commercial setting where short pile carpets are more prevalent.

Makita is certainly not directly targeting the homeowner.

Their line of vacuums look dedicated to commercial closed loop carpet and hard surface cleaning. If you want a Makita vacuum set up that can vacuum almost non-stop, you're probably looking at spending upwards of $2000 - $3000 for just one upright and additional batteries/chargers. It may very well be worth it from a time savings and potentially better customer experience (no cords running over floors). The agitation looks weak on the upright but again, short-pile commercial closed loop carpet doesn't need much for agitation if any. From what I've seen is most commercial carpets get extracted multiple times a year depending on traffic. The biggest thing for commercial operators is dependability and low maintenance. If the vacuums can handle abuse, pack their bags to the max, run 8 hours a day, and still pick up surface stuff, that's all that matters.

Next time anyone is at a hotel and you see people cleaning, look at the vacuum. Those poor things go through hell and back. Most of they time they are using a relatively cheap direct air sanitaire or off brand commercial vacuums from a janitorial supply company. I've even seen a Numatic commercial machine at a hotel before but only once. All I have to say though is that those vacuums go through hell. However, I could see a huge benefit to cordless. No more dragging a cord from room to room or running down the hallway. You might get a hotel operator to go cordless just based on the idea of customers not tripping and getting injured alone. The question will be if Makita can convince customers that spending 5x - 10x on a cordless vac is worth it. I would say it might be but every use case is different. People who clean office buildings at night have different needs than daily hotel cleaners.
