I was thinking this weekend how I miss RadioShack. Really liked this store as a kid. I can't recall there being one in my hometown, but after we moved we would shop at the one here sometimes if we needed A/V parts like antenna splitters, etc.
I always liked their toys and electronic science kits that you could build things with. I've noticed Michaels sells some similar kits these days. There was a location here in the mall as well, but I think mainly that one sold cell phones and such. The only thing I didn't like about RadioShack was that I got my first smartphone through them which I felt was a mistake. I wanted AT&T but RadioShack sold phones for Sprint and Verizon as well. When they ran the credit check they did it for all three carriers so I got 3 dings on my credit. Oh well. Both of the RadioShack stores in my town closed, but there is actually still one open south of here. I've never been to it but was planning to visit it sometime, I just keep forgetting when I'm down there. |

Although their prices weren't always the best, they were very convenient for finding small components and replacement parts. There isn't anything like that out there today and I have no idea where or if there's a Radio Shack still open anywhere around where I am. The two I knew of here closed up several years ago when parent Tandy Corp. declared bankruptcy. In the end they were just glorified cell phone stores and I think the last Radio Shack locations were dual-branded as Sprint stores.

I'm really tired of seeing physical retail fade away in general.
In the last few weeks our local Books A Million and coffee shop there is closing down. I fear the Bed Bath in Beyond in that same shopping center will close soon, because I hear that chain isn't doing well. That would leave them two vacancies plus the Gold's Gym and the place is only just over 10 years old... Then Pier 1 Imports also shut down recently. I didn't shop there but not good regardless. Plus JCPenney is closing down, leaving the mall with a third vacancy and only two anchor stores left. :( |
