We are at the epicentre of the pandemic in Canada so our vacuum specialty shops have been closed since the middle of March. The larger Canadian vacuum stores who have good websites are selling cleaners and supplies online - many with free delivery within a certain geographic area.

But I wonder how shops are dealing with repair requests. Are they offering home pickup and delivery as our local Montreal “Vacuum Rebuilders” used to do in the 1960’s? Is it dangerous to work on someone else’s vacuum cleaner these days? Do your local shops have certain measures in place to protect their repair staff from getting infected? I can certainly see how any vacuums or steam mops using water could harbour viruses and bacteria.

Would be interesting to hear how the pandemic is affecting your local vacuum sales and repair shops.

All of the small vacuum shops here closed many years ago, so we haven't had any effect there. The appliance stores that happen to sell vacuums as well as big box retailers are considered essential business so are still open. Although Bed Bath and Beyond is shut down.

I would think there is no more risk to repairing a vacuum now than there was before. A vacuum cleaner most likely won't harbor the coronavirus any more so than anything else that someone could touch and leave spores on. If it were wiped or sprayed down, there would be no issue. Dust particles and such inside won't likely spread the virus.

I'm trying to think of the last time I was actually at a portable vacuum store.

I went to a CV store in 2018 a few times to buy tubing and a few parts.

A lot of the "old time" vacuum stores that are the basis for any normal child's good childhood vacuum shopping/hoarding memories, have long since closed.

And I don't know but this is like a major WORLD-WIDE pandemic thingeee going on.

It's probably just me but I don't think most peoples thoughts are pondering if their local  vacuum store is open.

It does make for  comical meme though which during this somber time, we can use comedy even more:

1st picture someone looking out their window to their neighbor on a gurney being quickly wheeled to a waiting ambulance.

2nd picture close up of that person looking out their window with a thought bubble above their head with the text "What is that phone number for General Vacuum Store?  I don't need to buy anything but I'm wondering if they're open so I can go 'window shop'.  I want to try the new Miele. "

I still get customers and it hasn't really affected businesses as far as repair shops goes.

I'd be particularly afraid to work in any industry dealing with air particulates right now.   A vacuum bag catches all kinds of gunk.

I hope you're wearing masks when working on vacuums and if you have to remove bags or clean out bagless vacs you're doing out doors.

I guess I was thinking more in terms of someone whose vacuum just broke and is desperate to get it repaired or replaced as the whole family is home now and keeping the house/condo/apartment clean could be more of a challenge these days - especially if you have a pet that sheds hair. I certainly did not mean to infer that there are people out there thinking about an optional purchase of a vacuum just for the fun of it during this serious pandemic situation.

centra vacuum manufacturers

A lot of the central vacuums are made in Canada, companies such as Drainvac and Duovac are in Quebec I believe, also the company that makes the Ovo brand is in Quebec. I believe Canavac is based in Ontario. I wonder if they are still making their central vacuums. The major web sites that sell vacuums seem to be up and running.

Canadian people have a lot of CV's, which is awesome.  I don't know how that happened but good for them.

Universal health care,  cheap prescription drugs, most homes have a CV, and people who know how to write and speak English fluently.   What more could one ask for?

The weather.  OK, I'll stay here.cool

Very interesting...”by appointment only”...that makes a lot of sense. I imagine pick up and delivery of vacs needing repair would be another method of allowing clients to stay home while getting their cleaner fixed.

another Canadian brand and universal health care

Another central vacuum brand from Canada that I forgot to mention is Cyclovac, I think they are also in Quebec.
While universal health care sounds good in theory, it has major problems and over all is a bad idea. You have to wait much longer to see a doctor, sometimes months or years, and taxes are much higher in countries that have it.

Vacuum cleaners stores, three of them are open they originally used to be five but those two permanently closed, The first one I’m not sure why but the second one closed I think mainly due to rent issues

My store was closed, but we reopened every other day more than a month ago. We are now reopened full time and are seeing a TON of repair business. Many people with kids never put their vacuum away during this time. I'm not afraid to work on people's vacuums, never have been so I don't think I'll start now. I don't even own a mask because they were gone from walmart before I could buy one.

I wear a mask every time I go out.

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
I have several, from my renovation projects.
They also are EASY to make. Our news has shown people how to. I've given a few to other people, too.
I've only been to Walmart twice during this mess. I've not seen anyone buying vacs or bags, etc.
I wonder how our local vacuum scene is doing
I know lots of people are cleaning things more than before.
Luckily, I have an arsenal of vacs, and parts, etc.

Our governor still has us in "lockdown"

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
He is slowly reopening, according to counties.
The news, yesterday, showed several counties defying the mandate. Today, the governor went on the air stating that those in defiance are hurting others..... and will be hurt financially, when $$$$$ is withheld from them.
Some think it's awful, others think it's nothing.
Some are careful, overly careful, reckless, and, some are just stupid.
IF/WHEN they get sick, what will they do then?

Masks can be ordered from Amazon

Free delivery with Prime. Ironically, the mask come from China.

The vac shop I frequent was closed as non-essential, however, another that is also a sewing center was open as essential. Yet another that is a sewing and vacuum center was closed as non-essential I don't know what the distinction is that one is open and another is not.

An age-old question:

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
Who/What IS considered "essential".. and to whom?

Post# 425283 , Reply# 21   5/11/2020 at 15:48 (1,446 days old) by gregvacs28 (U.S.)

Open by appntmnt and no one allowed in the store.  That's more than reasonable .... and considerate for all parties.

For those working on the repair side, consider what you are exposing yourselves to with the dust particles in these vacs.  That's why cleaning them out OUTDOORS  is preferred.  Let any dust particles or germs float away.  You don't want to be breathing that.

At least have a strong vent fan at an indoor work station that takes the dust directly from the cleaner area and vents outside.  Not something that is just in the room on the ceiling somewhere.

Hi Mike,

Not to go too off topic, but I have never had to wait more than a few days to see my family doctor or any of his colleagues at my local health centre. Same goes for my 93 year old mother. We book our appointments online and if no one is available, the system can send us to the closest walk-in clinic. Keeps people with less serious problems away from the emergency departments at the hospitals.

Right now, Covid-19 has caused us to use more telephone consultations...which are fine for such things as prescription renewals and questions about the pandemic. I am very satisfied with our health care system and I find it worth it to pay higher taxes to get this kind of protection for my health and my aging mother’s health. Every time I needed to take her to the hospital emergency department for something, I was glad I did not have to worry about payment: just showed them her medicare card and than we could focus on getting her better.

Yep, the U.S. is the only embarrassing industrialized country without a universal health care system.

It's ridiculous and pathetic.

Shame on our knuckle dragging republicans who need a good kick up the back side for their self centered thinking.

In the events like this Covid stuff, it puts all of us at risk from those who don't have health care coverage.

It's one reason the U.S. has the highest infection and death rates.

Our one remaining vacuum store in Nashville is still open; I called and talked to the owner last week. I'm guessing because they are considered "essential", though retail businesses were allowed to reopen yesterday here.

Both of my stores have remained opened the entire time. I pulled the hours back slightly when it started just in case things got sketchy financially. No employees were laid off and I did not obtain any of the loan money from the SBA. In all honesty, everyone seems to enjoy the new hours.

We are currently 160% ahead of last month in terms of revenue and 185% ahead of May 2019...so business has not suffered in the least. It seems more people are aware of the junk out there and seem to want to replace with quality vacuums. Our central vacuum business has also been abnormally abundant for the last few weeks. We have also sold a ton of liquid sanitizer and misting/atomizer machines. This places us 20% ahead of last year entirely so the Covid has not affected the business at all. Hopefully that echoes true for all independent vacuum dealers.

As I tell friends who enjoy panic/drama- your fear is absolutely not my fear, so I have no reason to wear a mask or change my daily routine. My parents are older and have remained close to home. In fact, I’m relatively sure that after traveling in November/December I had something similar to CV19. Doctors offered no firm diagnosis and I was relatively voiceless/sickly feeling for 3 weeks. The biggest thing that we need still to fear these days are morons- especially those that feed panic, distress, fear, and emotional distancing.

Stay safe and be smart!

The uptick in business is just temporary.  Since people have had more time on their hands they are doing stuff now that they would probably be spreading out of the the next year or so.

People will get distracted with other things and business will sink back and not just for a month or so.  It will be for many months.

Also, people tend to have aversion memories to things that happened when there was a large bad experience happening.

That will no doubt factor into numerous business that will stagnate after the temporary blip up after or when things normalize.

Interesting outlook Greg. How many successful retail stores have you owned? Success being defined as still being open...We see a consistent 15-20% increase annually.

If you have consistent annual increases, good for you.

That's a separate issue from recent bumps in business that may well happen.

I've lived through several recessions and studied business. I might have some inside info on this.

Are you confident enough to state the real reason you feel that way?

What details are you trying to glean from our experience? If you have “inside info” I’m sure a lowly two location store owner like myself wouldn’t offer anything of value. As for why I feel like you are a waste of time- nothing you have said on this thread offers any real insight or intelligence. Your “humor” is wasted through explanation, taking away any sort of quick wit, and you have never owned or operated a successful business. Basically, your advice on anything other than what you collect would be like taking advice on healthcare from a CVS cashier.

SSvacuumguy, nothing was said about you personally or about your business.

I don't know what stressors you are dealing with but with this Covid going around one doesn't blame you for being stressed out. Especially if you've been open the last couple of months.

Really wish you the best of successes. Here's hoping venting has helped you.

During this pandemic, it would be great if vac shops could offer free pick-up and delivery of vacuums needing repair. Especially for seniors who are very vulnerable to the virus. Do any of your local shops offer this helpful service?

I wonder if in today's world it would be better for a local vac store owner to operate on line and from home.
They could show all the used and new vacs on their webpage and when someone buys something they could deliver and pick up old vacs.

No commercial over head rent? And no store hours.

You’ve just fully answered my original question as to whether or not you’ve ever owned a business. The absolute stupidity of your last post is beyond measure. You should visit my stores sometime and you’ll understand why your “garage showroom Internet store” is stupid. Most dealers that sell (non junk) online are required to have brick and mortar stores in order to prove they understand how to run a business and have the financial wherewithal to order $$$$s of dollars in merchandise to resell at a MAP price. If you have any further questions about the vacuum business or business in general, you’re welcome to private message myself or any of the very few other business owners on here before you allow yourself to appear moronic, yet again.

Business has been incredible these past three weeks we've been reopened. People are bringing them in 2 at a time. They broke the shark or rice car (or whatever wuhan machine they're using) and got the Kirby out of the basement. They break the fan or belt on it too. I'm in business to make money, so I will work on whatever vacuum they bring in that I can get parts for. Bagged or bagless.

I'm not worried about the dirt. I wasn't worried about it when I was five, shaking my aunt's filthy Hoover bag (model 28) outside and getting covered with dust. I didn't worry about it in my 20's when I would have to empty the filthy Kirby bags and get covered with dust. I don't worry about it now when I empty the filthy Dyson bin.

I'm also not worried about my customers. I stand at least six feet from them while talking to them. If they wear a mask, great. If not, it's OK too. What color is their money? Some vacuum shops are bagging up the machine brought in for repair and quarantining it for days before they work on it. I have a 24 to 48 hour turn around time because - once again - what color is that money?

It will be many times more difficult to sell vacuum cleaners when the unemployment cuts off. Sales will go down drastically, but the repair side will go UP. If you're a great vacuum repair man, who knows how to make repairs make money, you'll survive beautifully.

There are fewer and fewer dedicated vacuum stores each year it seems.  People buying online and buying throw aways.

I wonder how many more shops won't survive this virus attack.
