What is the Holy Grail of vacuum collection. To me, I believe it is the Kirby Janitronic or the Whirlpool power nozzles fitted to the chrome dome Rainbows from back in the day.

I would say the unique Singer canister from the 1960's (or 1970's?) with the retractable hose. In all the years of enjoying Vacuumland, I have never seen a picture of this cleaner posted by anyone.

All of these are!

That’s the beauty of collecting.

Mine would be the one that started it all - The Hoover Model O. My runner-up choice would be an Electrolux Model 5....

Electrolux Golden Jubilee/Super J

A beautifully functioning Electrolux Golden Jubilee or Super J. While some find the color not to their taste today, back then this model not only celebrated the Golden Anniversary of the Electrolux Corporation but it was also timely with the current decorating trend in America. Cream and Gold with some chrome accents. My Mother had cream beautiful drapes with a gold velvet tape stripe close to the sides of the panels in the living room along with Light yellow Gold rugs, the dining room rug was cream with a floral design and the background was Gold. My Grandmother had cream wallpaper in her living room with a Gold flocked velvety design, My Mother had a different version of the cream and gold flocked paper in her master bedroom. We even had a gold colored telephone in the master bedroom to match that paper. Mom had a glass top coffee table with a shiny chrome frame and gold accents. The finest door hardware was all polished brass for a Golden look and soon Gold bathroom hardware became popular. Brass chandeliers in a Golden look with clear crystals adorned many, many American homes. Our next door neighbors had gold wall to wall carpet and cream and gold wallpaper as well. No doubt a Golden Jubilee in its traditional Golden styling with cream and polished chrome accents fit right in to the decor of the period. Gold at the time was considered “regal” luxurious and top of the line. This was the “Glam” era and the Golden Jubilee was undoubtedly “glamorous” in its styling.

Also, the machine had several advancements over most other vacuum cleaners at the time...notably an automatic plug in wire free connection at the hose handle where it connected to the power nozzle wand became a new standard feature which remains in production to this day. This made using the power nozzle virtually wireless as the electrical connections became automatic upon inserting the hose handle into the wand and invisible and out of touch once connected. No more pesky wiring to plug in after inserting the hose in the wand and to get tangled around the hose handle or fall out while in use. Also, the model just previous introduced automatic power connection upon inserting the hose into the body of the cleaner and was continued on this model...no more pigtail wires to deal with plugging in, get tangled or come unplugged from the canister body. The power nozzle saw its first major change from the original design with the PN2 design standard on the Golden Jubilee with a wider suction opening and 3 wide glide wheel design and also the even more advanced automatic height adjusting floating head PN4 design on the Super J which added even wider opening for better brush contact and airflow. The automatic control feature became more advanced on the 1205 just before it adding a “check bag” light which continued on this model to help users understand why the machine stopped and the bag door had popped open. The automatic control adjustment dial became easier to set with dirt types written on the cleaning selector indicator along with the numbers to help users understand how to set the dial for optimal results. The automatic cord winder also became standard equipment shortly before this model eliminating the need to deal with cord storage, entanglement, etc. just a tug on the cord and let go and it disappeared into the machine like magic in a matter of seconds.

This Electrolux of this time truly was the most advanced and most automatic of machines out there. Automatically adjusting for carpet height, automatically stopping indicating when suction was reduced due to the bag filling with dirt which could be adjusted to operate properly for the type of dirt being picked up (the automatic control feature), automatic cord roll up and storage. Automatic out of sight electrical connections between the hose and machine body, and also and most importantly at the hose and power nozzle wand.

This model, in my opinion, due to both its advancements in vacuum cleaner technology at the time along with it's timely styling fitting decor of the time and the Golden anniversary of the company truly wins the “Hoy Grail” award for me.

For me it would be the Air-Way Chief or Super Chief. (See my meme--the back two vacuums). The first twin motored uprights that debuted in the mid 1930's. They could be used with both motors for rug cleaning or with just the suction motor for above the floor cleaning.

They had wood pulp cellulose fiber disposable paper bags and the brush roll had beater bars. They also had the swivel dome dirt indicator, both had dirt finder headlights, they could be used as, "fluffers", for feather pillows, both had height adjustors and both could be easily lifted, correct attachment applied, to clean crown moldings or high places.

Both had their hoses fitted to their hollow handles for the mentioned above the floor cleaning. The suction for this mode was greater than their upright competitors. And, there was the usual array of attachments.

All this and before World War II. The rest of the industry copied one thing or another for years to come.

Elite
1912 Hoover friction drive baby
Copper Janitronic
That strange 1930s Premier Duplex/Ge upright (second pic)

If I had to choose one I already had, the 1912 Brilliant Suction Cleaner (third pic on right) which is soon to have its own thread.

Forgot one, the 19?? WE Sturtevant type 0. It is probably the coolest vacuum I have ever seen, like the upright version of an NSS pig.

A Premier 21 Upright from the 40's.....my grandmother had one that I used to run when I

visited......I have it put away with the original bag, that has been patched. I also have another one

which I use for touch ups in between regular cleanings........I was lucky enough to find a very

good, but used brushroll in an old vacuum shop, which I sanitized and is in this machine. I use

a soft kirby belt for older models in it......

I would have to say the Rainbow model D2A or D3A. Complete with all of their respective attachments and the Eureka power nozzle.
