Hi everybody, so we are getting close to running out of disk space on our current server. Between the three websites we have nearly 400,000 pictures uploaded since 2004 and nearly one and a half million posts, disk space is getting very low. I estimate we have less than three months left before it completely runs out. We currently have 250 gigabytes of disk space on the current server and I have recently rented a new more expensive server that has 1 terabyte of disk space. This should keep us with enough disk space for hopefully 7 to 10 years if we stay about the same rate of postings.
I moved Automatic Ephemera over last week to the new server and automaticwasher.org I moved last night. All seems to be going fine (so far) and I plan on moving Vacuumland tonight or tomorrow morning.
SO HERE IS THE BIG DEAL: When I flip the switch and change the IP address of vacuumland.org to the new server it can take anywhere between a few minutes to 24-48 hours for the entire internet to catch up. What this means is once the switch is flipped some users will hit the old site for a while and some users will be on the new site. Because of this right before I flip the switch I will turn off all new forum postings and profile updates on the old site, so once you can see that you have the ability to post again you've reached the new site. This wait time is called DNS PROPAGATION, if you find you aren't reaching the new active site within 24 please clear your browsers cache and try again. Most users should be able to reach the new site within several hours, especially within the United States. It took Automatic Ephemera 18 hours before the very last click on the old server site ended last week. Last night after switching automaticwasher.org over it took about three hours for most logged-in users to reach the new server/site, although most we're there within an hour.
I'll make another post when I'm ready. There may be a few bugs after the switch and I'll make a bug report thread on the new server for you guys to let me know if something isn't working properly that needs to be addressed.
Thanks everyone and I appreciate everyone's patience during the transition. Questions/Comments?
