Hi guys! Happy New Year everyone.
I've been extremely lucky this week. I was just scrolling down free cycle at work and saw an ad for a free Dyson from someone just down the road from me. I thought someone else will probably be quicker and take it before me but thankfully - no. I picked it up on Tuesday evening and now have a DC02. I took it all apart (thank god old Dyson's are so much easier to disassemble than e.g. the DC11 i struggled with), cleaned it out. It works beautifully and has all the attachments (will send more pics later). One issue tho - the cord rewind is rather temperamental. Sometimes it'll lock in a certain position, sometimes it won't and will try to rewind the cable when pulled out. It seems to be a prominent issue with those models. Is there any chance I could have a go at repairing the cord rewind unit as opposed to replacing it? Any help or recommendations are highly appreciated!

After a glass of wine I managed to open the cord rewind, found the round rubber brake, gave it a little refurb and it works like new. Now get ready for some photo spam as promised.

The overall condition was surprisingly good. The only things that definitely needed changing were obviously the filters, the rusty hammered floor nozzle and the handle. I'm still waiting for the latter, but I managed to find a cheap floor nozzle replacement for a few pounds and it looks brand new!
I've given it a few test runs and oh boy is it vintage. So heavy, so loud, so obnoxious. Is it also normal for it to overheat? Cause after 10 mins that thing is HOT! It's going to go to a new home, as a gift to my ex flatmate, as she's currently living in an all hard flooring house. They've had a cheap Argos upright and that thing really does bad on laminate. I think it will do very well on hard floors from what I've seen. I did also test it on carpet and the performance was literally laughable. Hope she still stays my friend after I give it to her? Haha! Once I have my own 90s inspired house (which considering the living costs of London will not be happening soon) I'll take it back, retrobrighten the casing and do a photoshoot for the Hello magazine. For now, it should be an okay floor cleaner. |
