Okay, I know the title is pretty ambiguous, but I guess this is sort of a question as much as a statement to everybody here.
Have you ever picked up a newer, cheap, almost toy-like vacuum cleaner to use for a small pickup job and actually be pleasantly surprised by its performance and quietness of the motor? I typically stick to my larger vacuums for housecleaning (Electrolux, Rainbow, Kirby, etc.) but last fall, if you remember I went to Elizabethton TN to visit Jimmy Martin and picked up a truckload of vacuums. Among those, were a few smaller vacuums that I figured would make good toys for my kids to play with. To make a long story short, one of those vacs was a little Dirt Devil Dynamite II. I had cleaned it up and my kids were playing with it as a toy. One day I needed a vac for a really small pick up job on an area rug and grabbed it just because it was right there and I wouldn’t have to go dig something else out. Most of these small vacs I’ve ever turned on scream like a cat that’s had its tail caught in a door, and I didn’t expect any better from this one. Let me tell you, that little stinker surprised me completely! Not only was the motor relatively quiet, I was shocked at what all it yanked out of that rug in the few passes I made with it! Now I know it’s not going to replace my E2 Black, it sure caught me off guard, and now I find I grab it anytime I need a quick pickup vac or to clean the area rugs in the house! Has anyone else run into a situation like this, or has anyone had good success with the Dynamite II in particular? Oh, and I haven’t left the kids out, since I kind of took their “toy” from them, I ordered them a brand new Dynamite II from eBay ($10 plus shipping)!

I was quite surprised by the Bissell PowerForce Compact when I first used it. It seemed to have half decent suction and a powerful brushroll. It seemed like it would make a surface cleaner. The filter was kinda messy to clean though, and it filtered less than I would like. You would expect less from the cheapest upright vacuum on the U.S. market, but I was pleasantly surprised. Definitely no match for a Kirby or Aerus Electrolux, but it’s a cute little cleaner for the price.

My mom got a Hoover Windtunnel 2 Whole House Rewind. I was a bit skeptical, but it does a good job, is lightweight but feels decently built. It has rubber coated wheels and a brush on/off clutch pedal, plus shuts brush off when handle is up. The attachments are also one of the few I've tried that don't pull the whole vacuum over when used. It also seemed quieter than I was expecting.
Another vacuum that impressed me was the BOL Bissell Powerforce. Other than the short cord and filter setup, it was light and did a good job. Not too loud either. The bagged one I've never tried but I bet I'd like it overall better. |

Actually I just trash picked a Dirt Devil very similar to that. When I saw it in the snow, I thought it was a toy. It had a clog a mile long, and the hose connector was broken. A lot of cleaning and a couple zipties later, well... I haven't had a chance to use it yet, but I'm already pleasantly surprised with it. Despite appearances, it has a real filter, a real cyclone, a real power brushroll, real good suction, and a little 'performance indicator' (I guess similar to a 'change bag' reminder type of thing).
Compare it to this 'Easy Home' turd that my coworker gave me to fix, which has none of those things. Yes, it has a cyclone that doesn't actually cyclone, paper thin foam filter, and a turbo-type powered brush roll. Plus it feels like a cheap plastic toy. So yeah, I was pleasantly surprised with the Dirt Devil. |

This definitely goes to the Vax/Hoover Air Lift Steerable These can be bought under 100€ and it offers more than the Dyson ball models. Fully sealed true hepa filtration, multi cyclonic, goes under pretty low furnitures, light/maneuverable and so on. Cleaning head is very good and it has air valve to release suction if it's too hard to push. Only negatives are that the build quality could be better and it's quite noisy. Great value for the money. |

Thank you very much! I do plan to make a trip to see you very soon when this awful weather lets up some! Hopefully Hans Craig will get to join us, and we can fit a trip to Ridgewood in this time. Hopefully I’ll be able to lighten your load some of your excess machines as well! Oh, and I have you a Hoover Air Revolve put up to bring you as well! See you soon!!
