I have recently acquired a Rainbow D4C-SE. It was in decent shape when I found it. I carried it to th vacuum shop to have it serviced anyway. After several weeks of use, I have noticed that the suction is much weaker than on my Electrolux E from 1954. I have no experience with Rainbows until this vacuum, but have lots of Electrolux experiences. My rainbow actually seems weaker than any Lux Iíve ever used. Are Luxes just more powerful than Rainbows, or could there be something wrong with my Rainbow.

Now I have to say, that the Rainbow is nothing to sneeze at. Iíve used it several weeks and thoroughly enjoy using it. I love the freshness of the air and the quiet hum is just very pleasing.

I have included some photos. Does the separator need to be replaced? Could the broken lip on water pan cause a suction leak?

In a word ..YES

Unless you get one of the new Rainbows with the brushless motor, they are much weaker than most anything, the selling point is they never lose suction, the problem is they don't have much to begin with.

The rainbow D4 SE should have at least 50Ē at most 60Ē of waterlift. So if it is weak than it could very well be the gasket. The separator would not have anything to do with restricting the suction unless the machine is not taken care of (which by the looks you take great care of it). The big thing with the rainbow is airflow they are never supposed to lose suction or airflow. If you would like to you could replace the basin and I can see what my cost on a used basin would be for you if you would like and we can ship it to you.

The gasket still seems soft and pliable. How often should it be replaced?

Usually if the Rainbow is serviced it is replaced if it is torn during removal.
I also sent you an email...
