And opinions/observations on all of them...

Here's a list I believe to be comprehensive for the G5 and up machines:

Part#-----Description--------Appearance
152505---stiff bristles--------oblique tight tufts
152502---medium bristles---oblique loose tufts
156197---pet owners---------oblique white tufts
159398---delicate bristles---chevron white tufts

To date, I have only used the top two. I know that 152505 seems to be the standard brushroll and while I like it's performance, it seems too rough on standard carpet and far too rough on anything considered to be delicate. When I look in the bag, I see more loose carpet threads by volume than actual dirt.

When I use 152502 (or 156294 for my G4), I get more dirt and much less loose fibers. Since my carpet is "squeaky" clean, I figure why remove more carpet than necessary?

I have not tried the softer two options to date, but I have to wonder, are they too soft? What will they actually pick up?

Bill

Well..

I have a G3, and what is considered the standard brushroll. It works well with my carpets, but I've heard very good things about the new stiffer Sentria/ Avalir brushroll. However I found out that I can't use it on my G3 because of the bpi magnet sensor being on the opposite side... :(
I don't understand why they wouldn't make this same brushroll for at least the G3 and G4 models.

I recently purchased the delicate brush roll, it cleans pretty well. Can still feel it thumping the carpet

You Can Change the brushroll end caps. I discovered this recently a month ago when I ordered A brushroll for My Ultimate G, I ended up getting a g3 brushroll and was able to pop off the end caps and switch them around. If you was to get a newer style roll just pop off the end caps and re-arrange them for the BPI.

Switching endcaps...

Is too easy and not a good idea!

Now your BPI is working, But your brushroll is running in REVERSE! By swapping the brushroll end over end it is running in the other direction. Why does this make a difference, you ask?

Take a look at the oblique pattern of the brushes. They are now pushing the dirt away from the center fan intake instead of toward it!

The brushes are now trying to move the dirt toward the sides of the nozzle.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but someone else already tried this years ago. You can search the archives for it.

If you want to try the 152505 brushroll for the Kirby Sentria & Avalir, what you could do is find a good used powerhead for a G5 or later Kirby from a Kirby dealer, local vac shop or Ebay. Sure, the cosmetics would be different, but assuming this is a "daily driver", who cares? As long as it works!

Having said that, I would try putting your brushroll in the 3rd wear position first & see if you find that improves the grooming performance of the G3 powerhead to your satisfaction. I found that doing that made a world of difference with my G4. If you still want to try the Sentria & Avalir brushroll, I would see if you can get your hands on a newer Kirby that has that brushroll to try it out first. I wouldn't be surprised if you still had to put the brushroll on setting 2 or 3 to get decent grooming performance. Admittedly, that's the reason my Kirby's are for show now & why I prefer newer Royal Metal uprights as a "daily driver", the beater bar brushroll on the Royal is FAR superior to Kirby's.

As for why Kirby wouldn't make this brushroll for the G3 & G4? So that you might be encouraged to retire it & get a new Kirby with the improved features & performance.

Thanks Rob..

It's funny because I recently just thought that it might be time to upgrade.
Kirbys in general are very common. It's not too hard to find a pretty good deal on them too.

I was just at a goodwill store the other day and saw a Sentria 2 that was being sold for $200. However, it was in really bad overall shape.. When I turned it over, the brushroll, (which looked like the newer one) and entire bottom was beyond clogged with big clumps of dirt, hair, rubberbands.. HORRIBLE! (never seen a vac that clogged before) So I wasn't really able to test it out.

I'll keep looking around, or try to find a g5 powerhead. Thanks again for the info!!

I have a Sentria that I replaced the brushroll in a few months ago. I installed the newer stiff brushroll set at setting #1 and it grooms my carpet very well.

I have noticed the grooming is best right after the bag has been replaced. The extra airflow with a new bag pulls the carpet tighter up against the rug plate allowing the brushes to better contact the carpet. The grooming effect decreases as the bag fills up.
