Snapped this over the weekend from the TV show Roseanne. Always thought they didn't matched this up very well for the show. the family was always just getting buy and I don't think they would have bought this expensive of a vacuum.

This is true, but keep in mind, the vacuum was already well over 10 years old when this episode was recorded. It's quite possible Dan found it in the trash somewhere, that's where I found many of the Dial-A-Matics I now have. I wonder if this is the same U6039 they used in an episode of Family Matters?

Good Point. I think this was in a lot of the episodes. I remember seeing it by the front door and also in the master closet.

Roseanne had many vacuums over the 9 seasons. There was a Kenmore upright,Electrolux,Hoover Quikbroom, and I think a Concept II with the help mate onboard. I have all 9 seasons on dvd. I'll have to refresh my memory.

You know, one of my favourite lines from the Rosanne show was Rosanne saying:

"I ain't vacuuming until Sears makes one I can ride on!" :-D

the very first vacuum seen on the show was the concept 2 which would have been currant at the time. I always wondered why they had that expensive of a vacuum and then later they down graded to this older DAM

Or how they got an Electrolux Olympia One? Talk about way too expensive for the Roseanne Family.

Think outside of the box. They could have been gifts or hand me downs.

That and the fact that most viewers wouldn't recall what brand of vacuum was last used how many episodes ago. It also falls on the continuity director of the show. Same as in the movies and or theater. To make sure all the props that are for each set are the same and or in their proper place for each shot or retake.

I agree...

Most all situation comedies such as Roseanne, deal with props such as vacuum cleaners like this.. "will it get the shoot done?" "Will it make noise and appear to be doing the job they do?" and if history is really prevalent to the plot, the question "will it pass muster to the average viewer" comes into play.

I mean on One Day At A Time, and Laverne and Shirley they used a 91-918 Hoover Commercial. No housewife (housekeeper etc) in their right minds would use such a beast to clean at BEST a 1000 sq. ft apartment. Were they right for the timeframe...ABsolutely!! And looked older and more used than what they could have had... The Kirby Classic Omega that was seen on Happy Days? Was about 15 years too late for the time-frame. did it look olden times? YEp sure did... It's all about whats around, and what will do the job in Hollywood. Most of these machines were used to clean the sets. Hey.....It a vacuum right!?!?!

That said, the vacuums on Roseanne weren't too of the mark. Remember, while they were poor, they did have for the most part two incomes. And POSSIBLY aside from the Electrolux (which I never saw, but clearly they had); none of the vacuums that I ever saw were out of the question.

I grew up with some pretty poor families in my hometown, and surprisingly, they had nicer cleaners than the people who DID have $$ to burn. One of the poorest the "Kirchens" who had a I shit your not a tin roofed, tar-paper shack on the corner of town, who's kids popped off in yearly fashion from 1974 to 1980 had 7 kids who bracketed MY grade perfectly. They all wore the hand me downs, and looked "Reagan trickle-down" if I ever saw a family. One day over playing my friend Marcus who was smack dab in the middle of them all said....HEY my mom just got a new "SWEEP Vac"... After about three minutes I was inside and boy did she have one. She had a two tone grey and black Concept TWO Electronic. That was the nicest vacuum in our town that wasn't a Kirby or Electrolux.

And really could Courtney Cox's MONICA Ever really afford a Rainbow? I mean she had to room with someone to afford that sweet ass apartment that was gouging her probably $2000+ dollars a month.....

Reality and perception of such are rarely hand in hand. That DAM is nice tho...

End of my soapbox...

Chad

LOL also remember there was such a thing as a used vacuum shop. It would have been far more likely that they bought something used than new.

Having dealt with prop guys before they have little clue of what they are looking for in a vacuum and no wish to research it. If they go to a used vac shop and the guy tells them the only old machine he has in stock was from the 1950s they will take his word for it. LOL one movie that was shot in Regina needed a 1950s machine. The guy went to 3 stores looking for one and they all told him to call me. Guess that was too much work because the 4th and final store he went to told him a late 60's Hoover convertible was from the early 50s so he bought that and used it in the movie. Not impressed.

I thought I saw all the Happy Days episodes. I don't remember seeing a Kirby in any of the episodes. Would like to see that one myself.

Boss Hog of the Dukes of Hazard fame. Used a Kirby Classic Omega in one of the episodes. (The Original Series that is.) I also would like to see the Kirby in the Donna Reed show that I have Heard about.

Mr. Ed had several vacuums used in the show. Never the same one twice. One was a shop vac in the living room, another time was what appeared to be the handle grip of a Kirby he was using to groom Mr. Ed You did also see the end of the hose but that was all.

At least with Lavern & Shirley it was the same vacuum in each episode that you saw in the shot.

I Love Lucy had several uprights and a couple of canister/tank type vacuums in her show. Never seemed to be the same ones twice.

I remember there was an episode of Roseanne when Dan and the kids made her an office in the basement. She stalled her writing by vacuuming the basement with a blue Kenmore (Singer/Ryobi) all-plastic blue straight suction canister that was being sold at Sears in the late 80's.

Happy Days also used the 91-918 from Laverne & Shirley. There was also an episode that had Howard working on a Convertible from the early 70's.

YES!!!! I forgot they did... but yes!!! I never saw the episode where Howard works on a convertible, but being a hardware guy, and that Hoovers were VERY much sold thru such venues...They should have had the newest and the latest.... I could have seen marion certainly pushing a model 65-66-67-68 thru the livingroom. BUT I can honestly say that I have never seen an episode where the vacuum was being used. It was in the episode I mentioned previously... the Kirby was there implied that she was using it to clean..but the Kirby sat off in the background by the door into Fonzies apartment... near the mirror stand he used to comb his hair in....

On ONe Day At A Time however, they did use their 918 in several early episodes. One other vacuum seen, but was never seen used that I can ever recall was the opening credits to the 1978 season. Julie is seen "patting off" Schneiders forehead while he is up on the diningroom table fixing a green 1975-6-7 MOL Kenmore canister.

Anyway....

There is an episode of Laverne and Shirley where one of them is using, or has just used a Regina square cannister, with the buttons on top of the cannister. Its one of the earlier episodes when they lived in the downstairs apt. I think the episode centers around them not being able to get to work at the brewery because of bad weather so they stay home and clean house. Been many yrs since i saw it,,but i do remember it.

People are not going to watch TV shoes to see what appliances others are using or that the appliances are going to be with the time periods. Hardly ever will a TV show use the same vacuum or any other appliance over and over. It's just not wrote into the script. If you look at Roseanne you will see that the Blue Blue Kenmore was also used in Jackie's apartment in the episode where she slept with Arnie.

Only one TV show to my knowledge will ever have a vacuum cleaner type as a regular stage equipment and that will be Everybody Loves Raymond where they did an episode about Ray buying a Rainbow. If I'm correct after that episode that vacuum made a regular appearance.

@RainbowD4C

We all understand that the general public doesn't watch the show for the set.

We notice that there are times when a prop is out of it's place as it didn't exist at the time frame the show is relating to. The Kirby Classic Omega didn't exist in the 50's when Happy Days was portraying that time in history. If you notice all other props for the most part are consistent from one episode to the next. As well as placement. Lavern and Shirley had the most consistent set. Right down to the vacuum cleaner. Is the point that is/was being made.

Laverne & Shirley

This was my favorite show growing up as a boy, as I was lucky enough to be a young boy when this show was still airing!  My family always gave me grief for liking this show.

I remember one episode when Shirley was vacuuming with a cannister vacuum, and holds the hose end up to Laverne's mouth.  When Shirley pulls it off, Laverne asks if her tonsils are still in.  Shirley responds yes, but what a hickey you have on your mouth!

I can't remember which vacuum they were using.  But clearly, they were not using a Kirby cuz, who can afford a Kirby on a bottle capper's salary???

Last night Shaylee and I were watching the show About A Boy. It's a great show, anyhow season 2 episode 8 12 mins in there is a lux 1205 sitting on the table. A guy is working on a "fake snow machine" of course the snow machine is the vacuum

The machine...IIRC was a Regina Canister in like cream and gold ( a very common 1970's catalog showroom machine, with all kinda pipes and such that made it look positively clown like. And yeah she got it stuck on her lips. Another machine totally out of the appropriate time-frame... Strangely, the Hoover 91-918 wasn't in the back left corner of the living room...and in fact wasn't for multiple episodes...
