Well guys, it has been a while since my collection gained a new member, but yesterday - it did!

I came across the below linked item and got in touch with the advertiser within an hour of it going live - offering to collect it that afternoon. Thankfully he responded advising that would be fine.

When I got there the vacuum was sitting outside as in the picture, so into the back of the car it went. Immediately I could see there was no damage and minimal wear considering the age of the machine (15+ years).

Due to not having a decent camera at the moment I neglected to take any photographs of the process, but I can assure you it was stripped down (not completely, just the parts that come off easily) and cleaned. The bag was full to the top and dirt had started to collect in the hose... No surprises there! So, that bag went straight in the fire, the hose was cleared out and the belt was also changed. It wasn't actually as bad as I had been expecting, but it WAS slipping nonethelessd so out it went.

As I have yet to get any bags for this machine I took the cardboard piece off the old bag and stuck it onto one of those universal bags (made of the white high-efficiency material) so it can be used in the meantime. I dare say it will perform better with that than with the genuine paper bags!

Having put everything back together and polished the plastics I gave it a good test this afternoon in the living room, covering short and long pile carpets as well as above-floor cleaning using the stretch hose (I have to say though the quality feels terrible - very thin and easy to tear I'd imagine) and the extention tube, crevice tool and upholstery/dusting brush all of which were present and correct.

I'm very pleased with the machine and will get some photos for you soon, but I cannot promise they won't look like they were taken with a potato...

I don't know the exact year of manufacture, other than that the bag door was manufactured in 1995. Chris (Turbo500) has assured me that it is likely a circa 2000 model and cost £68.50 in 2001.

Hi Jamie,

Those were great machines! Sold in the US as Eureka and a replacement in the UK for the Powerline uprights, which came out in 1996. "The Boss" branding came in slightly later - around late 99/early 2000.

The first appearance I can find of that model in any of the brochures and catalogues I have from the time is in Argos Spring/Summer 2000, selling for £69. There was a higher end model called "stairmaster", which had a full stair stretch hose. There were also a range of bagless versions with absolutely awful cyclones in them.

I've attached some catalogue scans for info  - the first one shows your vacuum and the second shows the various bagless versions that were on sale.

Thanks Chris! Wasn't expecting a response from you, did you type that up on your phone or have you managed to source a working PC?

In any event, I'll hurry up and take some photos for you to see.

Good Lord! That Electrolux 1498 in the second picture is the one we had when I was young. My first vacuum memory, in fact.

I think we had discussions trying to place what model it could be but we never managed to find it.

You are right about the cyclones - my mother was forever taking it apart and cleaning it out until the hose tore in a few places and we got rid of it. Oh, and the auto-raise mechanism on the cleaning head broke so the brush roll was always in contact with the carpet, and as a result the belt snapped every other week.

That was a shock, and I'm surprised I didn't discover it before now.

Hi Jamie,

My laptop is working for internet access, but that's about it. I can't get onto Skype at all or a lot of other stuff.

I've ordered a new laptop which is coming next week, so should be sorted soon

Ah, sounds like the operating system has corrupted somehow. It could be fixed by reinstalling the OS, but if it is a few years old already then a new model would probably be the best solution in the long run.

I absolutely love those machines we had one but it was in purple since we got rid of it I keep having dreams about those particular machines. One of my favourite dreams was my granny had one it was in dark gray and the cool was it had a variable speed switch on the handle very cool and powerful machine.

I've just this evening done a thorough clean of the living room which meant the Lux was in use for around an hour constantly and it didn't miss a beat.

The only thing I do have to look into is a rather noisy brush roll. Some grease should cure that though.

Photos will be posted tomorrow (if I remember!).
