I am preparing a Kirby G4 for my sister for Christmas, and at the moment, the Kirby will go backwards by itself when I put it in Drive.

I cannot remember how to fix this for the life of me, and we're celebrating Christmas early on the 24th so I would love to have this problem sorted out tonight if so.

I solved part of the problem by actually putting that thing below in the right place, but now when I push forward on the handle assembly, it pushes backwards. damn it.
Could the polarity be switched or something?

I don't think

polarity matters on AC. Take the transmission out of the machine and on the back, right above the shifter, you will find three screws. Don't adjust the screw in the middle. Try unscrewing the screws on the right an equal amount.

In the photo look closely at the mass of black metal. For a G4, it should be unpainted metal. This assembly controls the forward and reverse of the transmission.

When you push the handle forward do the wheels drive the unit backwards? If so check the brush leads you may have the motor running backwards.

Normally if the motor is running correctly and the yoke is around that pin on the handle slide it's usually just a minor adjustment of the handle on the slide bracket.

Another way to check if the motor is running backwards is you won't get much suction.

Hope this helps

Bikeray, you and I were correct.

I had the carbon brush plugs switched on the motor, so it was running backwards.

Never have I had such a smooth tech drive. Too bad the vacuum won't be mine come tomorrow.

Tase,

You can adjust those two screws which are:

Top screw is forward clutch adjustment and bottom screw is reverse clutch adjustment.

Turn each screw only 1/2 turn at a time as they are very sensitive.

You can adjust both of these screws without removing the transmission.
