I was wondering which of the older metal Hoover canisters have the best sound to them? I have a Constellation and am trying to get a Slimline. I always heard people like the sound of the Constellation, and I agree they are pretty quiet and pleasant. I was just wondering how the others like the Slimline/Portable and perhaps others sound.

Celebrities for me. I know they're loud but the general sound has a nice tone. Nothing high pitched, screeching or otherwise. Why can't they make motors like they used to???

I've only used one Slimline. It was yellow, had good suction. It sounded good but I'd say its been about 15 years now, so I honestly can't think right now what it sounded like. I've never used a Portable or Suitcase styled machine. Constellations sound pleasant but my experience with those is also extremely limited. Actually I've never done any cleaning with a Constellation only heard one for a couple of minutes at GottahaveaHoovers house.

The Constellation is probably my favorite because they have such a unique design. They are easy to use as they are relatively light and have the nice handle. Good suction also. And a lot of fun because of how they float. I like to turn mine on and watch it float across the room when pushed.

I would guess the Slimline and Portable are a little louder, they use the Dial a Matic style motor.

I have never used either the Slimline or Portable. I did see a Portable once and noticed that they weigh a ton! Neat design, but they just seem heavy to use. Slimline might be a bit lighter, they are basically the lower version of a Portable. From the base down they seem the same.

I love the sound of my model 51 Aerodyne, smooth, quiet, just wonderful all around. also loved the sound of my connie model 444, that was just oh so quiet with the only sound being the air rushing through the hose and out of the bottom of the machine.

Slimline..

Sounds just like a Dial A Matic with the belt off, its the same basic motor with an extra fan.
