Hi everyone,

I'm thinking of getting a handheld vacuum for doing my stairs, as I don't have much knowledge on handheld vacs, what do you think in your opinion the best handheld vacuum? I doesn't have to be brand new either, it can be any type, new or old, bagged or bagless.

Thanks in advance,

Joe

I would say

blackheart's profile picture
That either the dirt devil plus with the 3 amp motor or the Kirby vacuette/douglas aardvac (or any other name it was known by) As a pet owner the revolving brush is a must.

The Kirby uses a cloth bag
The Dirt Devil can be used either with G bags or with a cloth one

I've never used one yet but i would assume a royal prince would probably perform similarly or better than either of those

I recommend Hoover Sidewinder

durango159's profile picture
I have a Hoover Sidewinder that I've been very happy with. Corded model with brush roll is a must for carpeted stairs. The Hoover brushroll bottom plate is not obtrusive either. It leaves very little area uncleaned.

I found the regular Hoover belts for this model too big and slip easily so I have remedied that by utilizing a smaller belt. Dirt Devil Hand vac belts or Hoover Brush Vac belts 40201057 work very well. My current belt has been on the unit for well over a year now and the cleaning power is still terrific. This vacuum does very well on pet hair and just like other Hoovers, it grooms the carpet, bringing up the nap very well.

Hi Joe,

I have an Electrolux Z61A Workzone had it for a few years now always been impressed by how powerful it is and the brush-roll can be switched off. I know George found one on offer for about £20 I think?

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! Although I've had a look around and I can't seem to find a Kirby Vacuette or Hoover Sidewinder anywhere, are you sure they were available in the UK? or were they just rare here? I'll defiantly look into a Dirt Devil handheld, as I've heard great things about them.

Wow, that Electrolux looks tough! I've have a look at that, thanks Dan!

I appreciate all the advice everyone!

Joe

Oh yeah, I forgot about that lol
I don't think I'll go for the Kirby, as I'm looking at the Dirt Devil or the Electrolux. Where did you find it for £20 George?

Thanks,

Joe

In my local B&M bargains store, I really recommend it as it has a hose and crevice tool, rotating brushroll, it's twin speed and has cord storage!

You need a handheld? I thought Henry was perfect at doing stairs : )

To be honest the best one I have found at doing stairs is either the old Dirt Devil handy hand held with the dust bag fitted or their later one (Dirt Devil DHC004) (not the same as the U.S models BTW) with a bagless cyclonic bin. I bought one not so long ago and find it to be an absolute boon - it has a pull out hose and a brush roll as standard - but also has wheels on the underside to aid gliding on carpeted stairs. The only downside is that if your stairs are really dirty, the filter requires constant cleaning out and the handle gets too hot in use due to the 1000 watt motor. It does however have a long 8 metre cord.

The older red ones though are usually available on EBAY UK or Amazon but can be hard to find and usually second hand.

Tesco sell the DD DCH004 at £60, Argos at £49-99 - another one is the Hometek Hunter if you can still find it.

Haha, although Henry does stairs fine for me, it's a bit inconvenient to get all the tools out etc. :P

Thanks for the advice, I think I'll go for either the older bagged Dirt Devil Handy, or the Electrolux.

Joe

Joe get the elecrrolux, its £50 from Argos, or in the sales its £40, but can get it for cheaper if you find diff websites, it was loud like a Dyson average, but its well worth it, has a little bit more suction thn the DC01 or about the same I think, and also the brush grooms so good, it lifts the carpet pile and has a stretch hose with a xcrevice tool that stores at the bal :) the bad things are that the filter can get messy, its a little bit loud f, but it is 700w Corded, and the exhaust blows out the back, I loved mine, but mine broke cus I used it to vaqcuum the whole house, 5 bedroomed 3 story house loads of times! so it did quite well, lasted 8 months and I was REALLY REALLY rough with it

so its am amazing underpriced vacuum :D and the belt shouldnt ever break because it has its own motor for the brush like a Dyson :D

Any questions, feel free to ask :D

Personally Id get the older Dirt Devil Handy - can be used bagless without a bag in place should you run out of the paper bag and compared to the 'Lux, the Handy is a popular model, with a good resale factor Just found one on EBY UK..

The Dirt Devil bagged handy Zip has terrible hose suction, its similar to a Dyson handheld, if not less, and that's a cordless Vacuum there, compared to the Corded model which should have constant power.

Joe:- Awesome! :D You would not be disappointed mate :D

The Handy Zip/ corded isn't a cordless one. Not sure what you're trying to prove there. A vacuum for stairs has been requested - I have a bagless one but given the chance of buying again I'd return to the old red Dirt Devil bagged hand held - it actually does have ok suction through the hose if you remove the drive belt - but it is far better to what its basic design offers - a brush roll, a proper one at that and wooden which means it lasts longer than plastic.

Also the Dirt Devil at 2.2kg weighs less than the Electrolux at 2.6kg. Review link for those interested.

Somewhere I used to work had the Dirt Devil DHC004 and obviously I had to give it a go lol It's nosier than the Lux, looses suction ALOT quicker and the filter is harder to clean, and feels cheap where as he Lux feels well made, just my opinion having used them both.

I would quite like a Dyson handheld, although I've heard a lot about problems with the battery not holding charge after a while, and I'd rather have a corded machine.

I have the DC16 animal and it didn't even last one year it went through 3 battery's, the motorised brush tool burnt out, and the switch malfunctioned all within 10 months of having it!!!
My friend has the DC35 and it doesn't clean well at all, it is terrible for pet hair, it barely picks up anything on carpet!! And it isn't worth the money!!

Wow, really? I wouldn't think James Dyson would put something like that on sale. Thanks for the advice George, I think I'll avoid one of those then lol.

My Auntie who has the Henry eco model, she hates it for cleaning stairs but she is happy with it for vacuuming carpets, etc.

She asked me what the best dust buster is, I showed her the DC31 / DC34 Animal and she likes it, but she was like £179?! WTH

I agree Dysons are rip off a lot of times.

I then showed her the Electrolux vac I had, awesome vacuum, but she didnt want a corded handheld :( so then I showed her the proaction with motor head tool thing, she might consider it :D Not sure if it's worth £42 I think?

The problem I find with cordless is that it just isn't powerful unless its a Dyson or a more expensive cordless dust buster with at least 12V powering it - and even then you're spending most of the time scrubbing the carpet with the suction only crevice or mouth of the dust buster to get dust out of carpeted stairs. Fine if the steps are painted - no problem then.

But then with the higher power behind it, the weight gets heavier - Im sure brands could easily just produce a high power, lightweight cordless hand dust buster, but for the moment they're happier to sell a big and bulky unit with just as short running times, such as 10 to 12 minutes. You're no better buying a corded machine than a cordless, though a cordless dust buster does have some advantages if used in a kitchen to get up loose crumbs off hard worktops etc.

Argos are selling a black Bush model at £42-99, so priced because it comes with a clip on pet hair tool, "high power" claimed to have 85 air watts, 12 mins charge time and weighs nearly 2kg. For some homes you're no better than getting or buying Argos value bagged cylinder vacuums or cheapy types from Tesco if you have just an upright vacuum and need something more compact to get up for stair cleaning and doing the car. Whilst an extension hose clipped to the existing one to an upright is all well and dandy, not all brands produce extra long hoses and some are worse than others when it comes to actual use.

Royal Prince Model 501 is the best handheld vacuum......

I think the Royal Prince and Dirt Devil 501 hand vacuums are awesome. They both have impressive agitation and airflow.

Haven't found a cordless handheld vac that gets grit out of our carpeted stairs. NBV240 cordless Henry looks interesting and has swappable batteries. Not a handhel but very portable. Does cost as much as a good canistet vac!

I like the slim Shark Ion handheld vac…..it’s so cool and powerful. It’s not for deep cleaning, but for surface litter it’s great - and it has a nice little stand which holds the tools too.

I'm a huge fan of the Royal Prince 501. I own three of them. I've had opportunities to get plastic Dirt Devils that replaced the 501 but they've never interested me except possibly as a brush roll donor.

That said, I recently acquired something entirely different in the form of an Oreck XL mini vac that's more like a scaled down canister. There's no provision for any sort of power nozzle but it does have enough suction to spin a turbo brush.
