I have a great list of production dates/info on Convertibles, but does anyone have this info compiled for the Constellations and Portables? I refer to Mr. Parker's production list constantly and would like to see something similar for the others. Jeff, Tom A., Fred S., have you or anyone else such a list?

Rick...

I thought I might try to bring this thread to the top. The Constellation was built from 11.17.54 to 1.30.75. There really were not that many different models. The same machine was virtually untouched to the end with only color changes and minor tweaking of the original design. There are three basic machines. The first design with the hose on the top, the second with the hose that enters near the top (non swivel)and the third which has the same hose entrance but the whole cleaner is "tilted".

The first series used a swivel top hose. The blue 82, mulberry colored 84, and the Heather Rose colored 85. These all ran from 1954 to 1957. The 82 was a non floater whereas the 84 and 85 floated on air.

The second series began in 1958 with the gold colored model 86 which later in its run became Porcelain Blue. It had a fixed hose and a new handle set up complete with a tail fin for winding the cord. This series is the most popular.

87...green with the electric hose feature
88...pink
434...Canton Red and white
444...orange "bittersweet"
454...aqua blue
858...pumpkin and beige

Then there is the lonely tilted model the 843 in gold and beige/brown. This machine was no different really other than its look. The performance was no different either.

The last two models were the 858 and the 843 which were both produced until January 1975. At the beginning of the 1970s, the Constellation was promoted as a very entry level cleaner which sold around the $30 mark.

Keep in mind that they badged these machines for JCP and others during this time so there could be other variations out there.

I hope this helps somewhat!! It is a bigger undertaking with the Portables and Slimlines as Hoover had many many variations on these designs.

Thanks guys!

I have an 84, 86, and an 858, with the exception of the tilted model, I guess I have the different models covered. As a kid I always wanted mom to dump the pink/white GE for a constellation, but never won out. Think there's any of the 87 models around with the electric hose? What was the problem with that model that they did not continue with that hose? It's hard to believe that they sold for so little at one time, although I remember our 1010 was only $47.77 and that was a bargain too.
