OK - the house is on the market and I have to thin the herd.  I should have thinned the herd before this.  In any event I have some interesting machines available, some pristine, some less than pristine.  Judge for yourself.  Some of these are very rare.  Make me an offer, I'll take the best one.  Please do not start a bargaining discourse on this thread.  I you have any questions about the machines please ask.  Otherwise, if you are interested, please email me at fnelson487@sbcglobal.net.  I'll be adding additional machines as time goes by.  Only serious buyers over 18 yo.  First up.  A Eureka Mobile Aire Vibra Beat.  Complete but the tool caddy is a bit rough.

Nice Eureka! I'm drooling.... :-)

BTW..is that the original hose? I always thought the braided hoses offered by Eureka in that era would have had a nice white stripe curving along its length in a candycane pattern, with the rest of the hose in the green or blue colour of the tools....this one seems all white.......just curious.....

Nice machines, Fred. Is that the 1010 convertible that we rebuilt at Terry's in Florida? If so, it's a very nice machine and runs like new! Roger, Fred S. and a few others passed a few hours working on that one.

It's interesting that you have two vacs that have a model number of "1010" there. If I remember correctly, the Eureka Mobile-Aire is also Model 1010. Our friends in the UK had a 220volt version of that Eureka sold as the Parnell Tenten!

Very cool coincidence for this thread! :-)

Actually

compactelectra's profile picture

There are a ton of machines still available.  I am going through in stages and putting them up for sale.  I have to get three rooms down to one.  From this batch two are still available:

Eureka Mobile Aire

Eureka ESP

The rest in this batch are spoken for.  I am so glad they are going to folks that appreciate them.  I have (with some wonderful help from my friends) moved the collection to the unfinished part of the basement for temporary storage while I show the house.  It is getting shown about every other day so that is good.  Here are some sneak preview shots of machines that will go up for sale.  Some of these will be kept as my core collection.  Here are the uprights.  Some of these that will be available are Dial-A-Matics and that psychedelic green Hoover.  The original Electrolux upright (brand new with box) is still available.

Hello old friend-

-do you remember the places you've been? When you and your RollEasy were new some said you might not find a house to clean because you were 'entirely new and different.'But you did and you cleaned it well. You were often brought out of the closet with your attachments for DUSTING,FABRICS and CREVICES.But then you were forgotton and made to hold the light bulbs. One day the doorbell rang and a nice man brought in a big, heavy, shiny vacuum. When he turned it on the light shone under the closet door and you could feel the vibration from the floor. Then they didn't wany you any more. The man said he would take you away but you weren't worth much. Then it was off to the farm lands and past the big horse barn to the little barn next to the Kenmores left in the rain when there was none left to adore them. But you went inside. It wasn't lonely as there were many Hoovers including the very first Slimline and a remote switch hose for the 87 Constellation and Lewyts and Sunbeams and even a Convert-O-Vac that didn't quite know what it wanted to be.Then one Valentines weekend those people came through the ice and snow and when they saw you they knew that Freda Diamond designed and styled you to be 'the most beautiful vacuum cleaner in the world'.Then you went to TN and it was like a reunion with all the vacuums from the 50s.Then a home up north wanted a RollEasy but couldn't have one of their own and you were with all your GE brothers and sisters. You all had nice colors but you knew you were the prettiest. And then a chance to go to the big city with an entire family of vacs. Some were younger but they learned to respect their elders. Now some are leaving. They may work again but not full time. You may have a new home but it will not be the barn where you hear the Sears rusting outside your window and listen to the Westinghouse-"I'm an upright,I'm a canister'I'm an upright,I'm a canister"for once again it is time for a vacuum 'you never have to lift'.-Oh the places you will go!

Hey guys, this thread from Fred begins:

"Make me an offer, I'll take the best one.  Please do not start a bargaining discourse on this thread.  If you have any questions about the machines please ask.  Otherwise, if you are interested, please email me at fnelson487@sbcglobal.net. "

Couldn't be clear-er.

If you are interested in a machine then EMAIL FRED FIRST.

Make him an offer. If it is too lowball he will let you know and you can up it in $10 increments. That's how it works.

It is not good form to expect any seller to contact you first.

It follows that posted statements like "Email me and tell me how much you want for it" is equally unlikely to get a response.

Dave

A lot of activity right now and I am having trouble keeping it straight between the website, Vacuumland messaging and email.  Email me please, it's easier for me to track.  I decided to organize the machines I am going to keep in one finished room in the basement.  My initial reaction was to empty the whole finished part out, but a well-organized display of vintage vacuums couldn't hurt.  This process is going to be the death of me.

Terry's passing gave me pause for thought.  I don't want to leave this task for someone else to deal with.  I collected helter-skelter and now have too much stuff.  Glad to see some of the machines go to good homes and to people who appreciate them.  Keep the offers coming.

I'll post the finished product of my core collection when I am finished organizing it.  YIKES!  Back to work.

Well

compactelectra's profile picture

I decided to move the final collection back into the finished part of the basement.  It will give the house character when it is shown (I hope.)  The will remember the house with the vacuums.  The back part of the basement looked too much like a disaster and I needed to separate the machines that I am keeping from those that are going.  Plus I need to see how many I can fit into one room which is now my self-imposed limit.  This was a good exercise to go through everything and sort it out.  Still have a lot of hoses and parts I need to go through.

I'll probably be bringing the leftover parts, hoses and machines to the convention to give away.

Shot one of the new vacuum room.

Fred, I know you have a lot to move but I wouldn't put out a lot of vacs or any of them on display, to potential buyers it seems too "personalized" and doesn't give them the canvas to see what they could do with the space, it's actually on my calendar that I get from my buyer's agent. I have never seen that brandywine Eureka before, I thought that was a Vactronic at first

Personally,

I agree with Fred and I do think the vacuums add character. People who have never had the opportunity to see a vintage vacuum cleaner collection now can. It may spark some interest in our club and open the door for some potential buyers to ask questions pertaining to vacuum collecting. Most people probably don’t know that there are people who collect vacuums.

Kenny,

gottahaveahoove's profile picture

You're right about the rarity of vacuum collections.

It is true, too, about "de-personalizing" a home. Family photos, stuffed hunted animas, guns, etc  are usually removed.  They USED to say, an empty house was a good idea.  Then, seeing how a bed, baby grand piano, roll top desk, etc  fit in a home are good as well. Some buyers try to imagine a Christmas tree in the house, too. In general, Fred,  you've done everything right.  A fresh, non-trendy or dated  paint job,  no clutter, immaculate home is the impression you want, and, you've made. We were told it should look and smell good.  No candles, etc.  but a nice clean smell. We were told , years ago, to have the house smell like cookies.  So, one day, I made cookies.  The place smelled great.  Viewers were hungry! Some put fresh flowers on the table.  Then,  somebody could be allergic.  You just can't win.

I "prepped" my aunt's house in Ireland, when I was over there for  a wedding.  She sold her home just after I left for the States.Fred knows, and those REALTORS know that the house will move.. to the right buyer.

I'd personally get a kick out of seeing a vac collection.  But,  it's true,  it will be remebered.  Imagine the new owners saying, "There used to be cleaners in this room, as well as a switchboard". Mine had a Wurlitzer jukebox and a suiy of armour until  just recently.  Believe me,  people 'talked about it'.

John, yes a properly "staged" home is what helps the most in the selling process, and it is a nice gesture to have some baked goods at an open house.

Seeing a bunch of old sweepers on display would leave an imprint on a buyer's mind but it still gives that personalization hurdle that the seller is not antsy for an offer, just my two cents.

Enough of this thinly veiled inuendo, please.

aeoliandave's profile picture

Early February's public squabble was embarrassing enough but to slyly resurrect it is unconscionable.

John Long, dear friend, please stop responding to guardsman's transparent prickling. We out here can easily read between his lines and you're a better man than this. It's not coming across as good natured humour but rather as forced diplomacy.

Fred, I would pay scant attention to the advice of an equally sour real estate mogul baiting from New Jersey; it is hardly in the same league or market as that around Chicago.

You have repainted, redecorated and staged your house magnificently; a little memorable personality in the finished basement room does not show negatively...except for those shallow 'buyers' who just want to kick tires and compare, who never had any intention of putting in a offer anyway. Any thinking person that tours Tarantula Arms will see right past the gleaming museum-grade vacuums to the potential of that room. Chin up, stay organized and carry on as you see fit.

Dave

After all that has been said about me, and to me (phone) it is abundantly clear that we are not friends. Insults and inuendos are hard to ignore.  But,  from now on,  5:53 p.m.  02/26/13 I'm done with this part of my life. I fail to see how that can be rectified.. An ocean has now flowed under that bridge.

I've gotten numerous calls, emails, etc  about this.  I'm very grateful.

With the house,  new job,  3 to 4 headaches a week now,  I really don't need any of this. So,  this is my FINAL address to this.

Fred, I'm sure you'll just be glad when the house thing is all over, and you're unpacked in your new home.

Thanks to all of my VCCC friends.  Now, onto vacuums,  HOOVERS, and the 'others' too.

 John.

Fred-

So sorry that your thread got hijacked. It's taken care of now. Back to the topic at hand.

Good luck finding homes for your beautiful machines!

There, now that some of the unnecessary blathering has been removed from Fred's thread, we can get back on topic. Sorry Fred that your great thread was high-jacked with absolute nonsense. It wont happen again in this thread, I PROMISE YOU.

Wow!

compactelectra's profile picture

This thread really ran off the rails didn't it?!?  Not sure how that happened but in any event - an update on the sales.  I am being really reasonable with the prices so all the machines with the exception of Terry's 880 and the Eureka Power Drive are sold.  I will donate the 880 at the convention for the raffle for the benefit of the club if it doesn't go and toss the Eureka Power Drive.

I am having to set up a spreadsheet to track all the sales which warms my CPA heart.  The fact of the matter is that so much is going on, I am losing track of it and we can't have that!

Nice to connect with all you folks and find new homes for these machines.  I keep on getting the comment that people are sorry I am thinning the herd.  Don't be.  I am not in financial difficulty, just reorganizing my life a bit.  Things are all good.  I go through these life changes occasionally and this is another one.  I just accumulated too much stuff and need to simplify.

Next up - when these machines are shipped - Hoover DAMS and some rare Luxes.  I must admit, as much as it is a pain to drag the machines to the UPS store, the 20 something guy who helps me is a doll and makes the trip all worthwhile!  Kiss

Fred

Well

All the machines here are now spoken for except the Royal 880 plus some machines from the piles.  I'll post more this weekend.  We are really making a dent guys!  I am excited.

I've Been Thinking

compactelectra's profile picture

About whether it is wise to put out the vacuums.  It is in the basement after all and only one room.  It is neat, organized and presented well.  One of the first brokers that came through that gave feedback said she loved the vacuum cleaners.  Even though they were piled up in the back.  It's the piling up in the back part of the basement that looks bad.  Well I am getting the piles down.

As for staging - the main and upper floors are staged beautifully.  I am gay after all.

Fred,

Tarantula Arms is stunning! After seeing that video I need an dirty martini with extra olives! I think you are spot on about the vacuums. I truly believe it will be memorable for the potential buyer. Who knows? They may even ask to buy a vintage cleaner from you to maintain the house!

Again

Email me about the above shown machines.  Shipped 5 yesterday.  We're making a big dent in the basement.  Big project for this weekend.  Moving the Maytag Neptunes back up to the laundry room and the 906s to the basement.  The 906s are going with me. I forgot that they disconnected the 220 v dryer outlet in the basement when we wired up the 906 upstairs.  Thank goodness I remembered.  A new four prong outlet and a bit of rewiring and it works like a charm.  Amazing - these machines are 45 years old and still work like a charm.  And beautiful too.  Moved them down because I think they added to the impression of being dated.  Well they are dated, but fabulous.

About Terry's Royal 880... that appears to have been made between January 1977 and February 1985 due to the all-round fan case housing and bag graphics. If anyone could please give me the actual serial # from its nameplate (it's on the back view of the nozzle by the front wheels), I would greatly appreciate it.

Example: B85-D-74801 (February 1985)

Thank you,

Ben (KirbyClassicIII)

How's the status on the house? I'll bet loads of people have been through the place by now. Chin up..it'll soon be over, I'm sure.
