There's a chart on Aerus' website that shows the history of the various models they made: according to it, the Ambassador III first came out in 1987.  A link to the chart can be found below for future reference.

Hope this helps!

The gray ambassadors were sold from 1995-1996. You can also call Aerus customer service and they can give you the manufacture date from the serial number.

the date is based on the first and last letter of the serial number

The date is not based on the serial number.

Even though this is an old thread, I'd offer some corrections along with additional info. from several other sources:

The first Ambassador cleaner, model 1623, was introduced in 1989, after the Model 90, model 1623 (1988-89), the taupe L-E, model 1623 (1987-88), and the jade L-E, model 1623 (1985-87). As far as I know all had a 10 amp 2-motor system.

Others in the Ambassador line included (not all internal changes known):

Ambassador Plus 1623 upgraded 11 amp High Performance 2-motor system; pn 1723 (1990-92)
Ambassador II 1676 air watts upgrade from 292 to 308; pn 1724 (1992)
Ambassador III 1676 colors (1993-94); pn's 1724 & 1751; reversed to match new Epic 6000SR & Ultralux Classic 1521
Ambassador III C101A; pn N115A; new model id but otherwise the same as the 1676 (1994-95)
Ambassador III C101G; pn N115F; 2-toned gray (1995-97)
Ambassador III C101H; pn N115K; oyster & fog (1997-99)
Ambassador III C101J; pn N115L; white & capri (1999-02)
Ambassador III C101L; pn N115Q; white & capri (2002)

The Lux 5000 C101K in white & capri was the last of the model C101s, but unlike the others it was equipped with an electric wand.

____

Here a photos of the C101J & C101L. I don't know if 'by Electrolux' indicated that its manufacture was outsourced or if it meant that it was sold directly to the consumer rather than by a door to door salesperson. The flag "Made in the USA" decal seems to hint at the former; like Electrolux wanted to assure its customers that production was still in the homeland.

Manufacture was never outsourced on this line of machines. "By Electrolux" was simply the design that was picked out that year by the designers. It had no meaning related to location of manufacture or method of sale.

The US flag was added simply because Electrolux was proud to be made in the US when more and more appliances were coming from China.

36 years old this design is. Can you believe it?

And the last steel body was made 1992ish. Nearing 30 years. wow.

@ Dave (reply #7) ... Yes, the very last of the line, the C101L, was, indeed outsourced. "By Electrolux" just like the currently-used "by Aerus" signifies outsourcing as I've come to learn. A way to confirm this is to check out the name plates; if the phrase "manufactured by" is omitted, then it's an outsourced product. Also, the flag decal was only used for a year or two during the transition period of in-house manufacture and outsourcing. I've talked with Aerus reps, who know the basics but not the specifics since Corporate limits such information.

@ Greg (reply #8) ... I agree; they're getting old!

@ Alex (reply #9) ... You're welcome!
