I saw this Royal at an estate sale this morning (they also had a newer Kirby, a Filter Queen, and and one of those lightweight Hoovers that are more like a dustbuster on a stick)- They Royal looked to have a Hoover A bag in it... is that what these take? They were asking $75 for it but I may go back tomorrow and offer them $20.... what do these usually cost? I've always liked the look of the Royal uprights - I'm guessing this one was made in the early 90's?

I'd go back and offer $35-$40 for it. In my eyes, it is well worth it. When you are trying to get them to accept a lower price, mention every flaw you can think of that you can see on it. That usually helps a great deal for me. That is supposed to take a Royal B bag, which is the exact same as a Hoover A bag. On an off note, how much were they asking for the Kirby?

I see that the "vacuum on a stick" is in fact a Dirt Devil Roommate, which, if I was going to that sale, I would definitely buy assuming it works and has a somewhat decent price, because those older American-made Dirt Devil vacuums are becoming pretty rare and collectible and I find them pretty fascinating, as you can tell from my screen name.

I have that exact royal in my collection! Its a bit of a loud machine but it DEFINATLEY has the power to get the job done! I love the machine and i would definatley recommend it to anyone that comes across one.

They wanted $125 for the Kirby - and the "vacuum on a stick" wasn't the Dirt Devil - it was light blue and white, took G bags, and said "Hoover" on it.

My bad. I thought you had just made a hasty generalization.

That begs the question: did they even have a Dirt Devil Roommate for sale?

No Dirt Devil Roommate while I was there...
I went back this morning and offered the guy $25 for the Royal, he said that he couldn't sell it at that price until 2:00. I went back at 1:00 and brought it up to the register with a box full of attachments, a hose, and a bunch of throw away bags and the guy said, "you win, but the bags are going to be an extra $5".

I cleaned it up a little and tried it out - WOW - it works great! I'd kind of like to get a different belt cover for it, but other than that, I love the look!

Let's see, the "E" in the model # indicates the rubber belt cover. I have a model 6103 that has the Adjust-O-Rite. Does this have the Rite-Hite adjuster knob?

Wasn't that model sold at the same time as the power tank?

royal vs. kirby

It seems to me that the Royal Upright is a cheaper or inferior version of a Kirby. The Kirby is much better than a royal. I know I had a Royal but I will always keep my Kirby. vacman27
