I have recently found some pictures of Royal vacuum cleaner ad clippings from various magazines of the '60s-'90s on eBay.
One of these is dated 1986. Their claim is "Royal ... The Last Vacuum You'll Ever Buy." Shown across two squares arranged diagonally, is a model 880 with the 1977 style bag but also with the front decal first seen on 1982 and later models of the model 501 hand vacuum. As I take it, the decal from the 501 was probably first used on the Royal uprights around October 1986. ~Ben |

@kenmore81
I would think there were no 1986-87 model 880s with the 1977-86 style bag and the 1982-up 501's front decal (below the Adjust-O-Rite), correct - because you know that ads use prototypes of vacuums that may not be seen for real the way they were seen in the ads. Correct? I want to prove there actually are some 880s out there with the 1977 style bag graphics and the 501's front decal that were made during the final months of the 1986 calendar year. ~Ben |

Thanks for sharing the ads. Don't think I've seen those before. As for the bag and decal, it's possible there could have been some overlap. And when they stopped producing that bag, I would imagine they continued using them until the supply was depleted.
And Royal has had some odd production twists at times. For example, I have seen them go between the oil tube front bearing plate and the perma-lube bearing plate on the same model. I've seen some 801's with a pigtail, and some direct wired. And with some of the early 50's models such as the 189, 215, and EH 230, I've seen some that had only one cord hook, and others with two. One thing I have learned about Royal, is just when you think you've got them figured out, they'll throw you a curve! Jeff |
