Lets kick off with a model I have been looking for since I started collecting Vacuums - the Hoover 419 (Harlequin) in red

Close up

No, its not photoshop - I actually got two from the same seller, and at a very reasonable price too. He literally had a huge pile of vacuums which filled his garage which he had to climb over - fortunatly he is a great deal lighter and considerably more agile than I am!

Gloriously red

vacbear58's profile picture
There were two red finishes for this cleaner, the later one does not have the stripy material. needless to say, that is still on the want list. There was also black and olive green in this finish. Although the cleaners were quite grubby when I got them they both cleaned up well and run well too - one is somewhat older than the other, but actually runs the best of the two

This cleaner used a push lock fitting for the hose - only ever seen on this model. It was Hoovers TOL from around 1964 to 1969.

Electrolux BOL

vacbear58's profile picture
This must have been one of Electrolux's longest running designs - first in beige brown (model 87) from around 1970 and then in yellow (model 96) from 1979 until the late 1980s.

The flex should be grey not black, although the black adds a certain "waspish" quality (groan!)

But from some reason

vacbear58's profile picture
All BOL models from WW2 until 1980s were actually noted on the ratings plate as Electrux

This machine was designed to be sold with shake out bags only - there is no mention of paper bags in the instructions - how BOL is that?

Colour coded

vacbear58's profile picture
A while back I posted about finding an earlier version of this cleaner, which had been on my want list from the start too - I only found out about this later model about 2 or three years ago, when ChesterMike turned one up. The earlier one was the one I really wanted but I could not resist this when it came up

Holland Electro

Yes, its based on the Lewyt.

That floor tool is probably the most frequently seen "generic" replacement, although it seems to have been designed for this cleaner

This was a BOL cleaner

vacbear58's profile picture
The whole scale of this cleaner is small, with short hose and wands.

By 1960 Pheonix were in their death throes - they lasted (I think) until about 1962. For years and years it seemed than Pheonix produced two cannister cleaners, both with the same motor although one cleaner was larger than the other. The nozzles were of the most basic being of a similar deaign to the earliest electroluxes - no swivel, no tread catcher, nothing. In the 1950s they produced a copy of the Universal bullet shaped machine, but still the same crappy tools.

Perhaps in a last ditch attempt to survive, towards the end they produced a whole range of machines - all still quite cheap but it was not enough to save them. They were also amongst the first to manufacture machines for private labels such as Gamages and many other department stores

Electrolux 380 - early/mid 1980s. This one has not had any clean up done yet - it can from the same place as the Hoover 419s

"Harlequin"

At last, confirmation of the "Harlequin Series"!

Years ago, I got documentation possibly from Zanussi, about machines that they had in their appliance museum. They made mention of a model of cylinder Hoover that existed until it was replaced by the "Harlequin series". I always wondered which models they were... it was never mentioned anywhere else.

So now I know. What would we do without you?

Cheers!!!
