The librarian at the school I work at was selling this on craigslist for $50 - when I told her I'd buy it, she said I could have it for free! She said her mother bought it new and she's got the warranty book somewhere. Came with a rug renovator and the original box of attachments! It's pretty dirty, but I think it'll clean up nicely.

parts

I need the hook that the top of the bag hangs on - does anyone know what that is called and where I can find one?

You can get that hook for the cord and bag at any vacuum shop or kirby dealer.

This appears to be a mid-1978 to early 1979 model. The serial number should fall between #D000001 and #E499999. Correct?

That's a good looking vac even before a spa treatment. It's even more special that your librarian gifted it to you. Bill Edstrom, who is a007kirbyman on the forum, is a club member who sells Kirby parts very reasonably. You can find anything you need through him I'm sure at discounted prices.

You Have a Mid-1979 Model

I would suspect that there is a tag on the back of the bag (by the zipper) on your model, right? The s/n on your unit indicates approximate production of March 1979.

@KirbyClassicIII

Ben, thanks for the information - there's no tag visible by the zipper, but the bag looks to be well used. Generally, I don't like doctors or Vacuums that are younger than I am (I was born in 1970), but I'll have to make an exception.

Here's the Classic III after it's preliminary cleaning:

I ran the Classic III for the first time this morning - WOW! is that motor loud! It doesn't sound bad, but it's just a much higher volume level than my Dual Sanitronic 80. I assume that's because it's more powerful?

Yep. More power. Has more amps, too. And the size comparison should tell you a lot, too.
