Anybody know of the whereabouts of a good Gold Crown? New to this forum and want to expand my collection. Had one once and gave it away (..silly me!!)
Love this model. Remember it from a relative when I was a kid.

Looking for a Golden Crown?

You and I both!  I too have fond memories of it from my childhood.  I would love to add one to my collection but in all my hunting around I haven't come across one yet.   I have a hunch it would take some real sweet-talking and probably a lot of something else as well to get one of the few collectors here who have one to let theirs go.  I know if I had one I would be loathe to part with it!

And I'm no. 3 looking for a Golden Crown! I remember visiting my aunt when I was a kid and always wanting to have a look at her Golden Crown. She also had the matching hassock.

Mine is Not a Golden Crown...But Close...

Same machine...a Super Roto-Matic...chrome dome instead of gold "guild". It has great suction.

that is

a beautiful vacuum....i like the pale yellow colour.

When I was a child, I saw that my moms friend had this exact vacuum.I used to ask every time we would vizit if I could take the Eureka and vacuum her house!

btw

that vac will pull on the suction guage the very same as a filter queen.

I'll be looking for any variation of that model, it's one of the most attractive in canister design of the '50s or '60s! Golden Crown is especially served by trim that shows it off to its best advantage.

2 years ago when...

was working at my vac shop an elderly lady came in with the exact vacuum as above, but blue. She told me that she bought her Eureka from the local Woodwards department store new in 1967, and paid $99 for it. She has had it ever since and has been her only vacuum....Anyways...it had the original hose on it so I told her to leave me with the vacuum a few days.

I was able to fit a new hose and I had a new still in the plastic bag , cloth filter for the inside. Now with the new hose and cloth filter, I tested it out on the suction guage , it pulled a whopping 90. This was the same as an older Filterqueen.

So the lady returned to the vac shop in a few days and I gave her a quick demo of her newly tuned 1967 Eureka... she was amazed,, and soooo happy.

Off she went.

Then... about 2weeks later, she came back to the vac shop and told me that the Filter queen guys were in town and they went to her house to give her a demo of the new FQ. She allowed them in , and after the demo , the FQ guys were putting the pressure on her to buy. She bluntly told them to GET OUT, and take your FQ with you. MY 1967 Eureka will suck the dirt right out of your FQ!.

I guess they left immediately..lolo

I laughed when she shared this story with me.

She said that when she now vacuums with her eureka it actually lifts the carpet up from the suction, and really pulls out the dirt, and she is very happy.

That was my favourite customer in the two years that I worked in a vac shop.

Citation,

Yours Golden Crown is the exact same one that my aunt had. It is the only one I've seen that has the cloth hose and the small curved wand that fits on the rug and floor nozzles.

I love all of them! I have a Cordaway with the front wheels and the light cover busted out, same white hood, but with blue trim. Rest of the vac is pretty presentable. I love the shape of the variations on the canister!

Tom!!!! You have the identical Eureka Automatic Upright that I grew up with in Montreal.....it is the exact model down to the correct graphic on the bag and the silver headlight frame. I have been desperate to find out the exact model number. Is the nameplate intact on the underside? Can you give me the model number? Is it 260 or 265 or something close to that? I'd be ever so grateful to finally get a model number for the vacuum that started it all for me!!! :-)

Hey Brian,
Mine is a 260 according to the serial plate. The light surround is pale gold (missing the lens) and the access plate is gold and ivory. Kinda beat up and only 1 speed works but it's like the one my Aunt had when I was a kid (say 1955-57) so here it is. Enjoy yours
Tom

Hey Tom - thanks for the information......I was kind of hoping it had a chrome silver headlight frame and silver accents on the hose-port cover....I think that Eureka added gold features to the Automatic upright and Roto-Matic canister in 1957 for the golden 50th anniversary of the company (Eureka started in 1907 in Detroit).

But I always thought that the model numbers somehow matched the year the particular vac was put on the market (Upright 260 = 1960, Upright 2070 = 1970, Upright 2072 = 1972, etc.) So I'm still not sure which model number we had on a silver-trimmed "Automatic" upright (I no longer have the vac....*sniffle, sniffle, boo-hoo*) Unless your 260 originally had silver accents and the headlight frame and hose port cover was replaced at some point.

I can't tell from the picture - is your 260 a turquoise/aqua blue colour, or green colour? Ours was definitely blue - I think the golden anniversary edition was more greenish in tone....

Tom, that trio is fabulous!  Seeing all 3 of those vacuums I remember from my childhood is a treat, but the 260 especially.  Our next door neighbor had that one and I had all but given up hope of ever seeing another one.  I just might have to take a side trip next time I'm up north at the farm.  Wink

Eurekaprince.....There were several versions of the 260, the green one like Tom's and a couple variations that were blue.

Thanks for the added info Neil...it was also nice to find out years later that the 260 was rated quite well by Consumer Reports - as good as the Hoover uprights that were competing with it!

Brian (and Neil)
A bit more looking and all 3 have gold trim against a paint scheme of soft green and cream. The Mobilaire ( the canned ham) has a 50th Anniversary sticker on it so I'm thinking they are all from 1957? The Rotomatic i got at an antique shop near Rogers and the other 2 from ebay back when things were cheaper. Need a dusting brush and crevice tool still (rotomatic came with just the hose so like good siblings, they have to share).
Neil - love to have you visit - drop me line if you're coming to the farm.
Cheers to both,
Tom

Just received my Singer Rotomatic, in better shape than the pictures on ebay. But I am looking forward to cleaning it up and improving its looks!

Ben and Greg

Ben , The little white upholstery nozzle is actually a Singer nozzle for a later model. There is a brown upholstery nozzle on ebay right now in case you want to make your C-1 complete. But save that white nozzle, you never know when you'll get a later model Singer canister.

Greg, The hose on your vacuum is rubber/vinyl! I've only seen the cloth covered hoses for that particular model. Of course they now leak air so I'm sure yours is better.

Nice Super Rotomatics everyone. I do have the tattered Golden Crown, well most of it anyway that I was once going to get rid of until I turned it on to clean and decided it worked too well to get rid of so back in the collection it went :-)

Post# 153943 , Reply# 32   10/2/2011 at 11:37 (4,582 days old) by massagemiracle ()

Thanks for the info! But can you provide a link to that nozzle on ebay? I would appreciate it. I have to admit, the vacuum itself is in great shape, even the woven hose is still functional and looks good too. But all the tools are in very poor shape, the carpet nozzle needs a new metal plate for the bottom, the dusting brush needs new bristles,  so does the bare floor brush, and the crevise tool was broke in half when I opened the box!

Marty!

My Singer book talks about the new lightweight vinyl hose. Even the Eureka POD that pops up now and then talks about the vinyl hose
How about a picture of your singer version in it's hassock?

Ben, your Singer cleaned up nice. You can use brushes off any Eureka tool and the bottom plate from any Eureka rug nozzle will work as well. I don't know how to put a link here ( I'm going to try ) but it's listed as Vintage Vacuum Mini Brush Tool.

Greg, that vacuum is in storage at the moment. I don't have the room here in PS to keep displayed. it will get switched out with one of the vacuums here so I can use it for awhile. Don't know when though.

Pete - your 260C is really close, but it is not the exact version I grew up with. The hose and hose port cover are an exact match, but the bag on my childhood Eureka had the vertical rectangle graphic that Tom's Automatic has. Can't tell if Tom's bag is green or blue, but our blue one had that graphic.

Always wondered how they shipped these Eureka uprights.....in the 1970's they split the handle in two pieces and so the whole vac assembly fit in a small square box. But these older Eurekas had a single piece handle.....wonder if the handle came in a separate box.....hmmmmmm.....

a quick story of the Grey/yellow rotomatic on ebay this week

I'm sure that everyone saw the rotomatics on ebay this week. The grey/yellow sold for $202.50. I emailed the seller and ask him if he ever found another like it to please email me.

He was on his way home and happened to be at a stoplight and saw a man put that hassock out at the curb with a free sign! He parked

and went over to look at it and there was the rotomatic in it! He put it into his trunk and the rest was history! I would never find

anything that nice driving home!!

Gary!!!! Nice Roto-Matic, buddy!!!

Jason - now I know that we had a 260 of some sort! :-) I thought the cord looked like a replacement because it seems so much darker than the blue base of the vac. I remember our Eureka Automatic 260 had a turquoise/aqua electric cord that was very close in colour to the blue on the rest of machine and on the attachments. But I guess the vinyl could get discoloured with the years.....

I'm now convinced that our 260 was circa 1958/1959 (the year I was born). It was not green with gold accents like the 1957 Golden Anniversary edition, and yet it was before the production of the blue bags with the letters for E.U.R.E.K.A. emblazoned in large letters down the front of the bag. Ours had the little vertical rectangle up at the top - similar to earlier Eureka uprights.

Thanks again for that great display of the 3 260's!!! :-)
