I thought I would share this with everyone who likes the older Eureka's such as the Model 250. I recently bought one in rough shape and had a new sanitaire motor put in it. Sanitaire has a two speed motor on their SC889. It says two speed and it is, but it is what they call a step down motor. Works great in the Eureka Model 250. With that said, a friend of mine was over and I brought out the Eureka Model 250, his mother had one just like it. When I turned it on he noticed how loud it was and I explained that it was a 7 amp motor instead of a 3.5 amp motor. He not being a vacuum person, but knows my fascination with them asked a question that made me think. He asked, does this really clean that much better than the original 3.5 amp motor that was much quieter? My answer to him was no, the 3.5 amp motor cleaned just fine. After he left I really started thinking about his question. The two things I gained was, the 7 amp motor could handle a Eureka Vibra Groomer II and I did not have to worry about an electrical shock from an old motor. I am pleased with how my 250 turned out, but it did take 8 hours of sanitizing and detailing, plus a couple of hundred for the motor, new cord, and labor. Was it worth it? I think so, but a lot of people probably would not have.
Anyway, I really just wanted you to know, that their is a 2 speed motor available from Sanitaire. Remember it is a step down and it does sound different when going to low speed. The brush roll spins noticably slower on the step down speed.
Sincerely,

More than a hundred dollars for a motor? That seems alot for a motor but a two-speed Sanitaire would be fun to play with.
I personally would not 'upgrade' any vintage vacuum unless I knew there are many in collectors' hands or the original motor was unable to repaired. There are many Eurekas around, and if you're happy with it, then it's worth it. If you can, could you post a video of the new motor a low-speed? |

Hi,
The cost for motor, cord, and service was around 177.00 and then tax which made it close to 200. I did not see the break down of the cost just my receipt. This vacuum store is kind of high to start with. It took 5 weeks to get the machine back, when he got the motor, he did not order the other part that makes it a step down and Sanitaire backordered that. There is a picture of the machine all put together in my photo album. I don't have the capability to make a video.
Thanks for asking,
