I found a Hoover Portable at a local thrift shop today, but didnt get it. It had a yellow top and a brown bottom, and wherever you reach in to unlatch it, it says "Hoover Portable" on it. It looks pretty old. The hose and attachments are brown. It had all the attachments. I was wondering, how old is this machine?Would it be worth getting for $10? It was in great condition.
Thanks, VW

How old?

Hoover Portable with chocolate brown attachments? My guess the window of manufacture would be 1968 to 1972.

Well,

I drove down to the salvation army and bought the thing for $5!
Its heavier than i expected! Whats this machine supposed to sound like? Mine sounds sort of like a DAM, exept when you turn it off, it makes a short, weird sound. Is this normal?

It's SUPPOSED to sound like a D A M

because it has the same motor. The Slimline does too. Both ,PLUS the Constellation take the same bag... now THAT was cost-effective!

The Swingette/Portapower Also Sounds the Same...

The Swingette and Portapower portable canisters also sound alike. I'd like to try to find a model S1029 (the one with the wheels) from about 1980, or an S1049 from about 1983.

Great canister vacs!

I have 2 protables: one at my grandma's house and one here. The one at my gmas house is pumpkin orange and brown. The one I have here is sort of a beige color and brown. It's a newer model with a square hoover logo instead of a round one on the older models. They have great suction even though they're sorta heavy.
