Todays History lesson. The Sani- Em-Tor
This was the exclusive design of James B. Kirby. That and his Toe-Touch-Control were the only features he didn't share with other compnies. The Sain-Em-Tor goes back to 1931. I have done extensive research on Kirby machines and here is the patent info for a hand vac of his. Date patented Sept. 8, 1936. Patent holder J. B. Kirby. Patent number 2,053,563. type of device. Pnumatic vacuum cleaner. Date Filed Jan. 29, 1931 Personally I like the Sani-Em-tor and wish Kirby gave us the option to use it, or the paper bag syseem as they did with the Tradition oan Heritage models. Sani-EmTor & hand vac invention(s)...
Alex (& all), The Em-Tor was actually Patent applied for on July 11th, 1930 & thus Patented in 1934; it was designed & invented prior to that & was thus incorporated into use on the Scott Fetzer Sanitation System upright. As for the hand vac, I believe you are correct Alex, in that this was the first "Kirby" hand vac to carry the Kirby name. However, one of James B Kirby's first hand vacuums was actually Patent applied for June 11th, 1910 & thus Patented in 1915. I hope this helps clarify for all. Bill | ||

Re Sani-Em -Tor
Hi Bill: I have done extensive research on Kirby, Electrolux, and Hoover. I have patent info on each of these brands and when I saw the comment about the metal box under the Kirby bag I knew instanly what it was. Going through my book of Kirby patents was the one mentioned in my post. I do not have the patent for July, 11, 1930 and would love to see it. As for the hand vac's of 1910 and so on, I would love to see those too. Thanks for the info. Alex Taber | ||

Concept prior to the ...Em-Tor
I forgot to mention, as we were discussing the "Em-Tor specifically" as we now know it... ...however, the basic (original) concept of it's later descendant ("the Em-Tor") was Patent applied for on January 20th, 1915 & thus Patented in 1922, Patent #: 001422105; designed & invented prior to that date. One other 'tid-bit', the "concept" was not "exclusive" to Scott-Fetzer (Kirby) [[sorry Alex]]; he also designed a "similar system" for dirt emptying where the Patent was assigned to Industrial Improvements Incorporated. Patent applied for on November 12th, 1930 & thus Patented in 1934, Patent #: 001949052; again it was designed & invented prior to that date. OK, I will shut-up NOW, --LOL hagd Bill | ||

As we all know the top brass of any company will say things that are not true. I always thought the Em-Tor was exclusive to Kirby, but the Bison has something like it too. As for the Keystone, and Scott and Fetzer, Jim Kirby designed these, so that is the same patent #s. As I said guys, the top Kirby brass gave me this info back in 1976. Alex Taber. | ||
